Samson Hill, Bryher
Date Added: 25th Jun 2012
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Would like to visit
Samson Hill, Bryher submitted by Thorgrim on 8th Aug 2004. Massive kerbstones surround this grave. This view looks across the sea to Tresco. During the Bronze Age and beyond the Roman occupation, the area covered by sea would have been fertile fields. At that time, there was one main island only.

Samson, North Hill submitted by howe on 19th Jul 2010. Probable entrance grave on North Hill. Due to the fact that they are overgrown and derelict, most of the sites are difficult to distinguish from the many rocky outcrops

Samson, South Hill
Date Added: 25th Jun 2012
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Would like to visit
Samson, South Hill submitted by Thorgrim on 2nd Jul 2003. The now uninhabited island of Samson contains dozens of entrance graves and cairns. This entrance grave is the finest and it overlooks the flats where stone walls are uncovered at low tide. The Scilly Islands were just one island in Roman times (with the exception of Agnes and Annet. The drowned land has often been seen as the Lost Land of Lyonesse.

Tinklers Hill, St Martins submitted by paulcall on 17th Oct 2006. One of the cairns on the hill. It is about 4.5 metres in diameter with a central cist, and the remains of a surrounding wall. I could not find any others on the hill, as it is covered in a lot of gorse and scrub.

White Island
Date Added: 25th Jun 2012
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Would like to visit

White Island submitted by paulcall on 1st Dec 2006. A view of White island from Top Rock Carn on St Martins, showing the hazardous isthmus between the two. Very low tides would be needed to get on and off the island to give enough to time to see the monuments which are mainly at the far end.

Rocky Hill
Date Added: 22nd Jun 2014
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Isles of Scilly)
Visited: Would like to visit
Rocky Hill submitted by Thorgrim on 19th Aug 2004. This early cross is now located in the garden of Rocky Hill Farm on St Mary's. It was formerly one of two High Crosses of St Mary's (the other is now on the gable end of Old Town Church). It was originally sited at Haycrosse and then, after losing its shaft, cemented to a hedge on Salakee Down (a "hedge" is the name for a dry stone wall in Scilly). Moved again when the airport was built - it now lives among the bizarre stones collected in the garden at Rocky Hill.

Date Added: 25th Jun 2012
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Kent)
Visited: Would like to visit

Chestnuts submitted by enkidu41 on 8th Apr 2004. The stones are massive (the 2 capstones and some uprights weigh up to 10 tons) and once formed a rectangular chamber 12' long and 7' high entered through a facade of sarsen stones. The owner will suggest you try dowsing rods. Do so, because you will be able to trace out the full extent of the chamber and long gone mound. TQ 652 592
