Hart Tor North circle

Hart Tor North circle submitted by TheCaptain on 17th Jun 2004. Hart Tor North Stone Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX577717 The cairn at the top of the northern rows is about 9m in diameter, and is surrounded by a lovely ring of 15 stone slabs. It is possible that there is another ring of stones still present within the cairn. This is the view to the west, looking down the double row.

Wookey Hole Caves

Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been devel...

Wookey Hole Caves Museum submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. I encountered this palaeolithic hunter-gatherer in the "Dinosaur Valley" at Wookey Hole. Hopefully it doesn't reinforce the idea that 'cavemen' co-existed with dinosaurs. His beard is looking a little green.

Aveline's Hole

Aveline's Hole submitted by caradoc68 on 26th May 2014. Aveline's Hole is a cave at Burrington Combe in the limestone of the Mendip Hills, in Somerset, England. The earliest scientifically dated cemetery in Britain was found at Aveline's Hole. The human bone fragments it contained, from about 21 different individuals, are thought to be between roughly 10,200 and 10,400 years old. A series of inscribed crosses found on the wall of the Aveline's Hole cave are believed to date from the early Mesolithic period just after the Ice Age. The pattern is s...
