Burras

Burras submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Nov 2002. Burras Menhir at Lezerea Farm SW680344 This spectacularly huge stone (9.8ft) has just one detracting feature - it was set in a concrete base in 1971! Permission is required to visit, and it was cheerfully given me. On return of the photos, I couldn't help notice the little face near the bottom of the stone.

Lady Well (Shevlock)

Lady Well (Shevlock) submitted by Rory on 26th May 2006. Lady Well is in fact on private land but given that the landowner has put in no fencing between the footpath leading up from Crafthole and the field where the well sits, you do get the message that you’re a welcome visitor. You can get there by travelling west out of Sheviock (on the A387.) After taking the very first turning right, stop almost immediately by a gate to your right. The well is through the gate and up the hill, past a quarry and in the north east corner of that plot of land.

St Genny's Well

St Genny's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 26th Sep 2006. The village of St Gennys is easy to find on the map near Crackington Haven. The church is situated in a dell amongst the high cliffs of the North Cornish coast and from a seat at the far end of the graveyard you can look out over the ever surging sea quite unaware of the high cliffs just below you. Park in the carpark at the end of the road and take the path to the church. On the right hand side of the path the green drops away steeply. St Gennys Well is tucked into a fold of the slope and w...

St Mathiana's Well

St Mathiana's Well submitted by theendlessbreeze on 31st Mar 2005. I believe this is the holy well of St Mathiana. It is located behind the church at Minster. Unfortunately the flooding of August 2004 has damaged the area surrounding the church.

St Stephen's Well

St Stephen's Well

St Stephen's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 15th Oct 2006. When we visited the water level in the interior of the wellhouse was not high enough to flow over the low part in the front. The old collegiate church in Launceston was consecrated by Bishop Bronescombe in 1259 and dedicated to St Stephen. The current St Stephen’s Church stands about half a mile to the east of the well. Very little seems to be known about the well but it does sit up a very pretty and peaceful lane.

Padstow Cross

Padstow Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2004. Like so many ancient crosses, this one has been re-shafted. Cast down after the Reformation, the crosses were broken, tossed into hedges or built into walls. The shafts made excellent gateposts or door lintels.

Fenton Luna submitted by Thorgrim on 15th May 2004. Fenton Luna is such a curious name! What does it mean? The well is found in Fenton Luna Lane which winds steeply uphill from the centre of Padstow. The well is behind the low cupboard and a later pump has been added. Both now redundant.

Our Lady of Nance

Our Lady of Nance submitted by theendlessbreeze on 11th Jun 2004. Grid Ref: SW870604 Location: Near Mountjoy, Cornwall As in the case of many holy wells, this one was difficult to find! From Newquay take the A392 to St Columb Road, past Quintrell Downs and then take the turning to the left just before Mountjoy to Lady Nance. Follow this road and take the first turning to the right down a lane. Here you will find a collection of cottages. The well is located in some undergrowth just off the lane, to the right of the first house you see.

Merry Maidens (Circle)

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 27th Oct 2006. August 2005. The Merry Maidens under fluffy white clouds. I rediscovered this photo and selectively manipulated the contrast so that you can now see the stones (previously they were too dark). I've uploaded a similar photo to Wikimedia Commons - they need pictures of ancient sites for use on free sites like Wikipedia.
