St Bryvyth's Well

St Bryvyth's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 16th Oct 2006. This well appeared to be much visited with signs giving directions to it and clouties hung on the wellhouse and in nearby trees. Despite extensive searching, I have been unable to find any information about either the saint or the well except that St Bryvyth, also known as Brevita, is a lesser Celtic saint and the patron saint of Lanlivery. The well lies very close to the Saint’s Way which runs from Fowey to Padstow and follows the route taken by 6th century Celtic missionary monks from Brit...

Aveline's Hole

Aveline's Hole submitted by caradoc68 on 26th May 2014. Aveline's Hole is a cave at Burrington Combe in the limestone of the Mendip Hills, in Somerset, England. The earliest scientifically dated cemetery in Britain was found at Aveline's Hole. The human bone fragments it contained, from about 21 different individuals, are thought to be between roughly 10,200 and 10,400 years old. A series of inscribed crosses found on the wall of the Aveline's Hole cave are believed to date from the early Mesolithic period just after the Ice Age. The pattern is s...

St John's Well (Tavistock)

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by AngieLake on 31st Dec 2004. I initially had some trouble finding it, but it may be accessed from either of two bridges: the large main traffic bridge which crosses the river from the shopping area, Town Hall and Market, going east, then turning to your right (south), down a path into the park (that's how I found it). You can then, if you wish, keep going, visit the well, then cross a footbridge a little further on, which takes you back into the large public car park south of the main shopping area.

Merrivale North Row

Merrivale North Row submitted by stewart on 12th Oct 2003. Grid Ref SX 555 747 There are two, main, rows at Merrivale - North and South. The north row consists of two lines of stones, aligned east -west and nearly 200m long. However, the two lines of stones are only about 1m apart so you can only just walk between them. It has larger stones at the west end and a blocking stone at the east. The southern row doesn't start or finish on the same alignment, is not parallel to the northern one and was, probably, not built at the same time. ...
