Red Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. After the experiments in the Broken and Bent pyramid, Sneferu, founder of the 4th Dynasty reduced the angle of the pyramid to 43 degrees, which is actually less than that of the pyramids at Giza.
A cramped 60 Meter long and 28 degree slope decending shaft allows access to the 3 central corbelled chambers, which are perfectly preserved.

Sneferu's Bent Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Sneferu's second attempt at building a proper pyramid. Half way through construction, he changed the angle from 54 degrees to 43 degrees. It was first believed this was to avoid having the casing collapse like at Meidum, but now it is thought the weight of the material was causing cracks in the chambers. The reduced angle reduced the amount of material piling up on top. There are entrances to the North and to the West for the two corbelled chambers.

Pepi I and II Pyramids submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Pepi I and II were Pharaos of the 6th Dynasty of the old kingdom, just before it fell into the chaos of the first intermediate period.
In between, you may see the Mastaba of Shebseskaf, the Menrenre, the Djedkare Izezi Pyramidand and possibly the remains of the Ibi I Pyramids.
The area is only accessible to all terrain vehicles, so this is only a long distance photo from the red pyramid.

Shepseskaf's Mastaba

Shepseskaf's Mastaba submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Shepseskaf was the the son of Menkaure and last Pharao of the 4th
Dynasty. He left the kingdom and his half sister to Pharao Userkaf of the 5th Dynasty.
Shepseskaf built only this small 2 step mastaba about 2 Km north of the Dashour Red Pyramid. It is in an area only accessible to serious 4 wheel drive vehicles due to soft sand and could not be photographed from close up, although access is generally permitted.

Is it just a coincidence that Giza is located exactly 30 degrees and zero minutes from the equator? Khufu's Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Largest of the pyramids with a height of 146 Meters, sides of 230 Meters and an angle of 51.5 degrees. It is the only surviving 7 wonders of the world.
There are 3 chambers and a grand Gallery angled passage.
4th Dynasty Pharao Khufu was the son of Sneferu who finally mastered the art and logistics of building pyramids.
There is only one small ivory statue of Khufu in existance, which is exhibited in the Cairo museum.

Great Sphinx submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Egyptologists generally claim that the Sphinx has the face of Khafre, while others claim the rock formation is much older.
The Egyptian authorities are about to start a refurbishment of the neck, shoulder and breast area, hence the scaffolding.

Giza Valley Temple submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. 4th Dynasty Temple next to Great Sphinx and leading up to Khafra's Pyramid via a causeway.
The core of the temple is limestone, but the inner and outer blocks are Aswan granite. The hypostyle hall has 16 Collumns.

Sakkara Djoser Complex submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Entrance to Djoser Complex at Sakkara. Pharao Djoser's statue, founder of the 3rd Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, was found at the complex and is now in the Cairo Museum. During his reign he was refered to as Horus Netjerykhet and is thought to have been the first to conquer Nubia. His successor Sekhemkhet has a pyramid a couple of hundred meters South, but it is quite damaged yet has an Alabaster sarcophagus.

Sakkara Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. The world's first large stone structure built under Pharao Djoser founder of the 3rd Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
Under the Architect Imhotep, the original small mastaba was expanded in all directions to a height of 62 Meters, a length of 123 Meters and a width of 107 Meters. The stone blocks are much smaller than those of the later pyramids.
The pyramid had a casing eventually, though this is now lost.

Userkaf's Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Userkaf was the founder of the 5th Dynasty and became Pharao by marrying Shepseskaf's half sister.
His smaller pyramid just north of Djoser's Sakkara Pyramid is made from smaller irregular blocks and infil material and is in poor shape. The casing stones are missing.
The head of Userkaf's colossal statue is in the cairo Museum.

Mereruka Mastaba submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Multi-room Mastaba of powerful Vizier under Pharao Unas of the 5th Dynasty and Teti I of the VI Dynasty, whose daughter he married. It appears to have been used by other members of the familly.
The mastaba is just in front of Teti I's Pyramid and abut that of Ka Gmni.

Teti I Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Teti I was the 1st Pharao of the 6th Dynasty. His wife Queen Iput I is thought to have been the daughter of Pharao Unas, giving his reign legitemacy. After Teti, Egypt started to descend towards the chaos of the first intermediate period.
His pyramid North East of Djoser's Pyramid at Sakkara is smaller and of lower quality than those even of the 5th Dynasty. It seems to be covered mostly with sand, though more sturdy material must be hidden underneath.

Unas Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Unas was the 9th and last Pharao of the 5th Dynasty. His Pyramid is just south of Djoser Sakkara Pyramid.
The pyramid is of rough irregular blocks and is in poor condition.
The first Pyramid texts, part of the Book of the Dead, where found on the side of the chamber, which is currently unaccessible at this time due to restorations.
