Log Text: On the way to Weyland's Smithy, stopped by this group to see our first barrow in Britain. Peaceful setting, and a nice taste of what was to come in Wiltshire. Would have like more time to be able to explore the different barrow types here.

London Stone

London Stone submitted by Thorgrim on 1st Apr 2004. Once considered to be the guardian of the City and the place where all distances from London were measured, the London Stone now sits almost forgotten in a little glass box set into the wall of 111, Cannon Street opposite the Underground Station at TQ326809. Very difficult to photograph because of the internal light and glass. It is very low to the pavement and I put my compact digital to the glass and hoped for the best! The Stone is a fragment of oolithic limestone and must have been brou...

Log Text: A must see on our day out from London to Avebury. When we got there there was a grade school outing having lunch on the barrow. It was fun to see the kids playing around on what to them must have just been another field trip, but for us was a (possibly) once in a lifetime visit.

Uffington White Horse

Uffington White Horse submitted by SteveC on 15th Jun 2020. Unable to be seen in it's entirety from the ground, this is an image taken from a drone.

Log Text: We just caught oblique glimpses of it from the road below. Once at the horse itself, it is surprising just how small the cuts in the turf are. I was expecting them to be measured in yards, but instead you could measure them in feet, or inches in some places. I'm sure there are better places to view it, but it was great to see the way it was made up close.

Log Text: Fascinating to be able to see the oldest accessible cave paintings in Europe. Wonderfully helpful guide who knew our French was not up to snuff, so he would summarize often in English. The series of (inaccessible) caves along the Cure river are also interesting to visit with overviews of the archaeological history of each one and the important discoveries there.
