Log Text: A long walk, but all on a nice footpath. It is interesting how often the idea of the punished maidens / knights / etc turns up in regard to standing stones.

Log Text: It was a little hard to tell exactly where this alignment was, because the map on the information board is set 90 degrees off, and has no compass rose. When we did find it, all that can be seen today is the tips of the now mostly buried stones.

Log Text: I was a bit surprised that so many of the features in this relatively remote area were fenced off. It would have been nice to move around a bit more to get some better camera angles.

Log Text: Fascinating to be able to see the oldest accessible cave paintings in Europe. Wonderfully helpful guide who knew our French was not up to snuff, so he would summarize often in English. The series of (inaccessible) caves along the Cure river are also interesting to visit with overviews of the archaeological history of each one and the important discoveries there.

Log Text: There was an old sign nailed to a nearby tree that shows that at one time this area was cleared ant labeled, but today the sign is weathered to bare wood, and the stone is surrounded by brush.

Menhir de Bel Air (Pipriac)

Menhir de Bel Air (Pipriac) submitted by aolson on 2nd Aug 2020. This menhir was moved from Bel Air near St. Just to be used as a monument to the Resistance. The Cross of Lorraine on top is also a lightning rod.

Log Text: One last site to finish the day. Bel Air certainly donated quite a few menhirs to the neighboring towns.

Dolmens de Kerhouarin 1+2 submitted by aolson on 1st Aug 2020. The only visible remains of the dolmens are these two slabs. The larger one has some cup marks.

Log Text: When we first got out of the car, we ignored the compost pile along the hedge and looked for the stones. Only after a bit of a search did we realize that the pile of dead grass was the object or our quest.

Log Text: We got to this site, and saw the menhirs and dolmen in the yard, and didn't realize that there were more in the cornfield until looking at the satellite map on the computer later that day.

Log Text: I noticed that these rather unassuming menhirs were on a website for Brittany tourism, so we decided to check them out as they were on our route. While they are nice, it is a bit of a mystery why the website would chose this site as one of about. five megalithic sites in all of Brittany to be featured.

Log Text: Surrounded by tall corn this year, the menhir was still visible and imposing from quite a distance.

Log Text: Even after losing menhirs to St. Just and Pipriac, this village seems dotted with them. Unfortunately, due to the widening of the D177 we weren't able to get to some we had seen on the satellite pictures.

Sépulture de Bécihan

Date Added: 2nd Aug 2020

Sépulture de Bécihan

Sépulture de Bécihan submitted by aolson on 2nd Aug 2020. The most likely remains in the area, in the process of further destruction by the trees.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Not much to see - we had to walk back and forth along the road for a while to try to determine which pile of rocks was the most likely to be the remains of a megalithic site. This one is located just inside a pasture.

Pierres Droites (Monteneuf)

Date Added: 2nd Aug 2020
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))

Pierres Droites (Monteneuf)

Pierres Droites (Monteneuf) submitted by TheCaptain on 19th Jun 2007. The true extent of these stones was only discovered in the last 20 years or so after a forest fire, yet this set of aligned menhirs is probably one of the most important in France.

Log Text: Wonderful site, far better ambience than the Carnac alignments. The interpretive signs and reconstructions based on archaeological findings are very interesting.

Menhir Fourchu

Date Added: 2nd Aug 2020
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Yes on 19th Jul 2020. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Menhir Fourchu

Menhir Fourchu submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Sep 2013. This is a nice menhir stood at the side of the road just to the east of Lezonnais. It is about 3.5 metres tall, 1.5 metres wide and only 0.3 metres thick, and has a nicely forked shape at the top, hence its name, and a sort of nose on one side.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Extremely overgrown, with the large stone covered in ivy, and the smaller ones lost in the ferns and brambles. (Not a good place to wear shorts I learned the hard way.)
