Tow Barrow submitted by MikeAttwell on 13th May 2020. Tow Long Barrow. This is a fine small rectangular long barrow aligned SSW - NNE. It is in relatively good condition with both ditches clearly defined. The photo was taken in November 2015 looking SW.

Log Text: Parking at the southern edge of the hamlet of Wexcombe, a visitor has to follow a track that climbs up Wexcombe Down. Nearing the brow of the hill, some well-intentioned trepassing off the track to the right (heading west) takes you to the remains of the barrow. Anyone trying to find the barrow would benefit from using OS app to guide his/her steps.
While the views of the countryside to the west and north are impressive, it must be admitted the remains of the barrow are somewhat underwhelming; topping out at about four to five feet, it is appears as a short, broad, squat bank.

Log Text: Located by a track, the barrow is now identified by what is merely a slight undulation on the field surface, possibly best seen from its eastern side at its northern end. Without knowing where to look, it would be difficult to locate it in the field.

Log Text: The remains of the barrow are quite substantial, although there is a deep cleft running the entire length of it. A hollow with a few sarsen stones is all that remains of the burial chamber at the southern end of the barrow.
The views of the countryside looking north-west are impressive.
