Broadmayne Bank Barrow

Broadmayne Bank Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Came Wood Barrow Cemetery (SY699855) This cemetery extends from the wood, across the hill top, with a glorious view to the coast, including Chalbury Hill Fort, and the impressive Bincombe Barrows. This picture is taken on top of only one of three bank barrows (all in Dorset) with two round barrows to the left (N); the barrows go from behind the camera through the fields and into the wood.

Broad Stone (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett on 27th Apr 2005. The now levelled Broadstone, with rods to give a sense of its dimensions. A jest was made that it had already suffered enough without the Christianisation imposed upon it. Mind that there road...

Brenig 8 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The prominent knoll position of Brenig 8, AKA Waen Ddafad, looking SE across Llyn Brenig. In viewing any pictures of the Brenig Cairns, it must be rememered that the lake is a recent addition.

Brenig 6

Brenig 6 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The small cairn of Brenig 6. Also reconstructed in situ, with posts denoting where posts contemporary with the cairn were discovered. Its low position in the landscape is puzzling. Most cairns sit high on ridges on spurs with good visibility in at least one direction. This does not. This view looks to the South West, with Maen Cleddau below the ridge.

Brenig 51

Brenig 51 submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Feb 2006. The reconstructed Platform Cairn, aka Brenig 51. This magnificent monument was a complete surprise - 26 small stones in a perfect circle, with a 7 metre wide flat cairn ring around, raised a couple feet above the ground. The most unusual cairn I have seen to date. Wonderful. This is a composite of 3 shots, looking to the S over Llyn Brenig.

Brenig 46

Brenig 46 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The more ruinous Brenig 46 Cairn, looking SW, with Portal user whatisthat in the background. Many of the cairns here have been reconstructed in situ. Obviously, this one has not been! Nonetheless, I'll often walk miles to see something like this, so still worthwhile. This cairn is situated north of a mediaeval Hafod - a summer grazing base, called Sion Lwyd. We kept wanting to call it Sian Lloyd!

Botley Stone

Botley Stone

Botley Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 16th May 2004. Picture shows the ring cairn in the foreground, looking north into the forest. Botley Stone is classified as the remains of a Bronze Age ring cairn. What is visible now, is a hollowed out grass ring; upon closer inspection a good number of angular rocks are visible under the grass. Ring cairns are very rare in Shropshire, and given that all other burial monuments upon The Long Mynd are barrows comprised of earth (some with varying degrees of stones or kerbing surviving) of, this ring cairn is...

Boltstone

Boltstone submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2007. Within the view presented of this field once stood The Boltstone. No trace survives, it seems, as the farmer destroyed it looking for fabled treasure beneath it in 1839 - so the story goes. Not far to the NW of Kinver hillfort, off Bannut Tree Lane, near the footpath shown cutting across the field.

We parked on a very wide verge further down the road. The inscription is on the north side, and can be made out on the photo if not actually legible. The CADW guide to Gwynedd gives the inscription as CUNOGUSI HIC IACIT, meaning (The Stone) of Cunogussus. He lies here. It may have been a prehistoric monument, but is thought to be ...
