Coate circle

Coate circle submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Nov 2007. Coate Circle, wedged between Swindon and the M4 Motorway, visited with permission of the landowner 25/11/07. 5 Stones remain in an arc; 1 additional stone is to the SE towards a tree, and a further stone to the S. There is another stone to the W in a field in front of a barn, visible from the main circle. The five stones of the arc are visible in this picture, as is the outlying stone just to the front left of the tree.

Wayland's Smithy

Wayland's Smithy submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd May 2008. Wayland's Smithy, last November 15th - I could not have wished for more perfect conditions for a first visit. Wall to wall blue sky, advanced copper toned beech tree leaves on the ground and above, sunlight across the facade, and 90 minutes of complete solitude up here.

Woodman's Cross

Woodman's Cross submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd May 2008. Four bowl barrows overlooking Wool, one mounted by a trig point, a little way north east from Woodman's Cross. Way before I was interested in stones and lumps and bumps, as a young teenager I'd come to this hill to take photos of the trig point against sunrises / sunsets, or stop for a snack on a long walk. Now I know what it was I was really wanting to photo. Coming back years later the barrows were so obvious... they were just part of the hill when I was a kid!

Woolsbarrow submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd May 2008. There are much wider earthworks in the trees than the obvious mound which makes up the hillfort clearly visible in the centre of the clearing...

These images of The Rudston Monolith are unique historical records of the monument from seventy years ago, showing it without the lead cap it now has. Express permission to use the images on The Megalithic Portal obtained from the copyright holder. Gelli Hill Circle

Gelli Hill Circle submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2008. The circle as it is best located - in the angle of a boundary; this is inconsistent with the 1:25000 map, from which the boundaries have changed (as have footpaths) which can cause confusion. 28th July 2008.

Rhos y Gelynen Stones

Rhos y Gelynen Stones submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Aug 2008. Three standing stones, two prostrate, and one partially buried lie in a row west-south-west to east-north-east. A long walk for this, good footwear imperative. Best reached by first visiting the stones at Cefn Llanerchi near the masts and aerials, then cutting a line out west to reach a track which runs past them. Any lower approach ends up being horrendously boggy.

Cefn Llanerchi

Cefn Llanerchi submitted by TimPrevett on 9th Sep 2008. The fallen stones at Cefn Llanerchi. A good walk up from the reservoir car parking, but an engaging site for the enthusiast. Scan the horizon for prominent distant peaks, look at the proximity of the track... remote feeling, bleak and beautiful. Worth visiting the Stone Row at Rhos y Gelynen from here, best approached from above - much less boggy!
