Castle Ring (Stitt Hill)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jan 2006

Castle Ring (Stitt Hill) submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. Not so much a hillfort, but likely an enclosure for livestock, dating from the Bronze Age. This is a semicircular earthwork, wide open on one side, and useless for defence. There are cross dykes on this ridge too, probably aiding the livestock management of the time. This photo looks SE from a footpath ascending nearby, with the curve of the semicircular earthwork on the ridge.

Castle Ring (Staffordshire)

Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 5th Jan 2004
Castle Ring (Staffordshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2004. Castle Ring SK045128
On the NW side looking to the W; there has been extensive clearance of trees and invading rhododendron around the ring; unfortunately, despite it being the highest part of Cannock Chase, the only part with a panoramic view, looks towards (Rugeley?) Power Station!
Castle Ring was actually recommended to me by a colleague at work who does not know of my stones / pre-history interest; she grew up in the Cannock area, and given we were making a trip to Stafford anyway, I'd...

Castle Ring (Rorrington)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 12th Jul 2005
Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill.
Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound.
A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

Castle Ring (Derbyshire)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2004
Castle Ring (Derbyshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Feb 2004. The westernmost ditch, with dry stone wall on top of the tallest rampart.
The views to the N and NW from here are commanding, even on a grey day such as this. The town of Youlgreave was clearly visible, and the adjoining field to the west, which was open and 'rolling' very much reminded me of Wiltshire.

Castle Hill (Shropshire)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Nov 2003
Castle Hill (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Nov 2003. SO461959; lovely views to the E to Caer Caradoc, and NE to The Wrekin. What may remain of ramparts is probably underneath fern, fireweed, and brambles. It has been argued to be a defended Iron Age settlement, shorn up on 3 sides by human efforts, defining an area about 60 by 90 feet. A ditch and bank is supposed to be visible on the W. This view is looking towards Church Stretton and really is all there about to be seen; though it is a pleasant location. The nearby 1902 church of St Michael & Al...

Castle Ditch Eddisbury submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jul 2007. As viewed from the east; notice the two figures atop, in the centre - these two gentlemen we bumped into, and they'd been there specifically to visit the hillfort, too.

Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 24th Aug 2006

Castle Bank (Radnorshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Aug 2006. A situation worthy of Lord of the Rings - Castle Bank in Radnorshire. Its situation is best appreciated from the hills surrounding its location in the vast natural amphitheatre. The univallate earthwork and stone ring are easily traced from this distance. A fine 3D fly-through model can be seen of this at Llandrindod Wells museum.
