Hafod-y-bwch
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: Wales (Wrexham)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Feb 2006

Hafod-y-bwch submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Feb 2006. A large barrow, west from Wrexham, adjacent a footpath. Heavily covered with gorse, and truncated on one side by a track, the barrow is a prominent landscape marker - though not as prominent as the enormous slag heap which sits just left (north) off picture.

Country: Wales (Denbighshire)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Feb 2006

Brygolen Cairn 3 submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Feb 2006. Brygolen Cairn 3 in the frosted, foggy landscape. Supposedly some of the best views in Wales up here... anyway, it certainly was unforgettable. The cairn is extremely disturbed, though extensive.

Eglwyseg Kerb Cairn B
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Denbighshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Feb 2006

Eglwyseg Kerb Cairn B submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Feb 2006. Not as defined as its neighbour, the Kerb Cairn B is still obvious. Have taken it with the tree in for point of reference, but the trees up there were largely dead, or on their way - so this may not be there for much longer.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Denbighshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Feb 2006

Eglwyseg Mountain submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Feb 2006. Megaraks in the mist... the visibility up here varied from second to second, literally. I went to explore the panel on a large stone, turned around and my companion was disappearing, along with the standing stone. See main entry for details.

Creigiau Eglwyseg Boundary submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Feb 2006. Showing an earth fast stone (centre foreground), which was likely part of a cist within this enormous cairn, with boundary fence built over the top.

Some natural limestone protrudes from this barrow, just visible on the other (west) side.

Brenig 51

Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Conwy)
Visited: Yes on 13th Feb 2006
Brenig 51 submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Feb 2006. The reconstructed Platform Cairn, aka Brenig 51. This magnificent monument was a complete surprise - 26 small stones in a perfect circle, with a 7 metre wide flat cairn ring around, raised a couple feet above the ground. The most unusual cairn I have seen to date. Wonderful. This is a composite of 3 shots, looking to the S over Llyn Brenig.

The Burgs
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Feb 2006

The Burgs submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Feb 2006. The Burgs viewed from the south east. February 2006. The upper (back) line of trees delineates the inner rampart, the outer being less easy to make out. This visit did not permit a closer look, but hopefully a future visit will help find more.

Brenig 6
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Denbighshire)
Visited: Yes on 20th Feb 2006

Brenig 6 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The small cairn of Brenig 6. Also reconstructed in situ, with posts denoting where posts contemporary with the cairn were discovered. Its low position in the landscape is puzzling. Most cairns sit high on ridges on spurs with good visibility in at least one direction. This does not. This view looks to the South West, with Maen Cleddau below the ridge.

Brenig 8 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The prominent knoll position of Brenig 8, AKA Waen Ddafad, looking SE across Llyn Brenig. In viewing any pictures of the Brenig Cairns, it must be rememered that the lake is a recent addition.

Little Mayne
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 5th Nov 2003

Little Mayne submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Nov 2003. Right. I had to look in to this one; again - another place I have passed hundreds of times, right near the road. I had a short amount of time - so believing I had seen stones on the N side of the road on previous passings, I investigated there. I found a cluster of stones, most certainly once part of some feature, clustered under some trees in the corner of a field (ref. SY 723 871), and observed a stone in a field to the east (ref SY 724 870). The following day I obtained my copy of Peter Knigh...

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 16th Nov 2003
The Wrekin submitted by TimPrevett on 16th Nov 2003. SJ630083 The Wrekin; atop this monster of a hill which dominates the landscape between Shrewsbury & Telford, are some remains of a hillfort. A spectacular location. We went up the Wrekin on Christmas Day one year - and got caught in a snowstorm at the top! This picture taken from Corbet Wood SJ525237, which gives commanding views across the hills to the south.
