Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 5th May 2005
Abdon Burf submitted by TimPrevett on 5th May 2005. Looking at the summit of Brown Clee Hill - home to the remains of Abdon Burf hillfort; this is nearly completely destroyed from quarrying. Records suggest a recumbent stone some 8ft long still surviving.

Visited: Yes on 6th May 2005
Stapeley Hill Earthworks submitted by TimPrevett on 6th May 2005. Showing one of the Bronze Age earthworks that completely traverses Stapeley Hill east to west here; I've marked a line just under the dark green cross dyke here to help the unfamiliar spot the feature. See the main entry for more details - click the blue highlighted text to the top left of the pic for more information.

Giant's Grave (Shropshire)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 6th May 2005
Giant's Grave (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 6th May 2005. What I believe to be the feature called "Giant's Grave" on the SE side of Stapeley Hill. I was not able to check it out in person - it was the other side of a field boundary; I hope to get permission and visit the site next month. This was zoomed in from the other side of the field, and based on my most meticulous map reading! The stone to the right seem to form a right angle against each other, with another stone apparently defining what could be interpreted as a chamber area. The site may be n...

Castle Ring (Rorrington)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 12th Jul 2005
Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill.
Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound.
A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

Ellerdine Heath
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 9th Oct 2005

Ellerdine Heath submitted by TimPrevett on 9th Oct 2005. This stone, maybe post mediaeval but not certain, is documented in a photograph between 1931 and 1934, with its last entry on the SMR in Septmeber 1975. A visit on 9th October 2005 yielded nothing. A thorough search of the field and boundaries, to the left of the road behind this signpost (used this photo as point of reference for anyone else checking), was unsuccessful.

Middleton Hall
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jan 2006

Middleton Hall submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. In the grounds of Middleton Hall Farm, to the North of a track, west of Mitchell's Fold, the SMR records a standing stone. There now seems no evidence of the stone. We looked in June 2005; after some nettle bashing, we could look through the fence, and the the only tentative offering was some stones in the field. So, this is the site of it, but the stone is no more it seems. This photo is here just as documentation, not for quality.

Castle Ring (Stitt Hill)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jan 2006

Castle Ring (Stitt Hill) submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. Not so much a hillfort, but likely an enclosure for livestock, dating from the Bronze Age. This is a semicircular earthwork, wide open on one side, and useless for defence. There are cross dykes on this ridge too, probably aiding the livestock management of the time. This photo looks SE from a footpath ascending nearby, with the curve of the semicircular earthwork on the ridge.

Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jan 2006

Ratlinghope Hill Camp submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. Immediately next to Stitt Hill is Ratlinghope Hill Camp; possibly a hillfort, or maybe another animal enclosure like its neighbour. The single ring is visble just below centre picture.

The Burgs submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Feb 2006. The Burgs viewed from the south east. February 2006. The upper (back) line of trees delineates the inner rampart, the outer being less easy to make out. This visit did not permit a closer look, but hopefully a future visit will help find more.

Chirbury
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Henge
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Mar 2006

Chirbury submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Mar 2006. The location of the ring ditch, possible henge, west from Chirbury. Just an apparently empty field. The road to its south runs higher, and this photo is taken from the road. The crop mark was certainly in this field, and the approximate area has been circle. Size of the circle has no bearing upon the size of the ring ditch.

The Berth
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 26th Mar 2006

The Berth submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Mar 2006. Iron Age Slave Chains. A gathering of the Berth Archaeological Group on Saturday 25th March had the enormous pleasure of a guided talk by Ernie Jenks (right) who carried out the dig here in 1962/3.
One of the most unusual finds here at that time were some slave chains like those found at Llyn Cerrig Bach on Anglesey, showing the slave trade was alive and well in pre Roman Britain.
Here Ernie demonstrates with his own reconstruction of the chains, using himself and Portal Contributor VirtHist...

The Knockin Hoarstone
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Sep 2006

The Knockin Hoarstone submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2006. Last recorded in 1930, protruding from an earthen bank, this lost Shropshire stone should be in bank / hedgerow on the right hand side, somewhere just either side of the gate. Had a good look around, but no success. A stone further into the field along the footpath (just left of the tree on the skyline) initially got me excited, but should be about 5 feet by 2 feet. This was not. Will visit again when vegetation is down.
This is just off the A5, on a bend, so take care. It's rather obvious her...

Grey Stones
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Sep 2006

Grey Stones submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2006. Another lost Shropshire circle remains lost! Largely destroyed by 1883, this was probably originally a bowl barrow, with a diameter of around 100 feet. Revealed and damaged by penetrative ploughing in 1945 and again ten years later, some structure was revealed - but now there is nothing to be seen, it seems.
Transcribing the grid ref places it in the field in front of the picture on multimap, but putting it onto the GPS places it higher up on the crest of the hill. If this was a barrow a rid...

Caus Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2006. Caus Castle at evening twilight 22/09/06. Mediaeval fortification upon an Iron Age hillfort. Access is not easy, even though a footpath runs through the east side of the monument, and somewhere to park to leave the car completely escaped me!
