Dyffryn Ardudwy submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Oct 2005. Dyffryn Ardudwy is a very easily accessible site, which brings with it a problem. The larger, later dolmen is used as a den. A hearth was built against one of the uprights, now heavily sooted. The chamber was littered with drink cans, and the surrounding cairn has broken drinks bottles and glass in many places. We took away a carrier bag overflowing with unwanted material.

This stone, maybe post mediaeval but not certain, is documented in a photograph between 1931 and 1934, with its last entry on the SMR in Septmeber 1975. A visit on 9th October 2005 yielded nothing. A thorough search of the field and boundaries, to the left of the road behind this signpost (used this photo as point of reference for anyone else checking), was unsuccessful.

Flying from Exeter to Liverpool, the plane went over North Devon, Minehead, Cardiff, the Brecon Beacons, heading NE at Builth Wells, then flying up over the Clwydian Range. Inbetween, I saw this hillfort pop out between the clouds. Having looked at other pictures and multimap aerial shots, I am fairly sure this is Dinas Bran just N from Llangollen.

Had a great 5 hour walk from Preston, Sutton Poyntz, along the Ridgeway, the Bank Barrow, Bincombe, then back around Chalbury. As I came over the last ridge, this sight greeted me just after sunset.

I have visited the nearby Rhos y Beddau circle and rows twice since Feb 2000; on this, my third visit, I was determined to find the other reported circle, Cwm Rhiwiau.
The stones are indeed there, the tallest stones no more than ankle height. We were able to locate the northern outlier, but missed the southern outlier. We found the diameter of the circle surprisingly large for the size of th...

Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant (Standing Stone) submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Jan 2006. The large re-used Bronze Age standing stone next to the road in the village. Once it was one of several stones here; now it's the only standing stone in the village.
If the archaeological database is interpreted correctly, the schoolhouse behind had a mound where the stone was formerly situated - before the school house was constructed.
Parking around the bend as seen, ideal for visiting the village.

Llwyn Bryn Dinas submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2006. The nearby hillfort of Llwyn Bryn Dinas would have had a commanding view over this east - west valley. The upmost part of the hill's shape is part of the defences, clearly visible either side as you go along the Tanat Valley.

Can find nothing in the SMR. Arguably, I found a slight raised area to the SW of St Cross Church, N of Branden Drive, with a circular depressed area around it (circled in pic). This was the most convincing thing I could find that there was something here. Just to the W there was a small mound among some trees near the footpath, but I did not find that so convincing. Middleton Hall submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. In the grounds of Middleton Hall Farm, to the North of a track, west of Mitchell's Fold, the SMR records a standing stone. There now seems no evidence of the stone. We looked in June 2005; after some nettle bashing, we could look through the fence, and the the only tentative offering was some stones in the field. So, this is the site of it, but the stone is no more it seems. This photo is here just as documentation, not for quality.

Castle Ring (Stitt Hill) submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jan 2006. Not so much a hillfort, but likely an enclosure for livestock, dating from the Bronze Age. This is a semicircular earthwork, wide open on one side, and useless for defence. There are cross dykes on this ridge too, probably aiding the livestock management of the time. This photo looks SE from a footpath ascending nearby, with the curve of the semicircular earthwork on the ridge.

Dinas Bran submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Feb 2006. Dinas Bran, approaching twilight emerges through the mountain fog across from the Eglwysegs. On full size, this picture looks fine, but resizing, it suddenly goes very grainy. Anyway, we were hoping for a day of good visibility - but far from it! Instead thick fog, and ice hugging anything that stays still on the mountain for more than a couple hours! Very atmospheric.
