Beeston Castle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2004
Beeston Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Apr 2004. The remains of the prehistoric hillfort are very hard to detect; the place they are most in evidence are either side of the gatehouse to the outer bailey. This is either side of the main route to the top of the mediaeval castle.
Some of the medieaval walls were actually built using existing earthworks from the earlier fortification to aid defence. These earthworks are most in evidence when the foliage is low.
This picture is taken on the north east side of the entrance, which is on the rig...

Blackhammer
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Scotland (Orkney)
Visited: Yes on 1st Aug 2006

Blackhammer submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Aug 2006. The more southerly facing side of Blackhammer; though its situation is beautiful and relative preservation to be thankful for, the interior concrete walls and skylights don't give quite such an impressive ambience. Typical of most of the tombs here. Nevertheless, unmissable.

Blacknoll Hill submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Jul 2007. The trig point mounting probably the easiest barrow to see on Blacknoll Hill. From there, though, the Five Marys, and numerous other barrows are visible.

Bod Deiniol submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Jul 2002. Bod Deiniol SH368857
Visited Tuesday 15th June 1999
Access: We parked at nearby Llyn Alaw reservoir visitors' centre car park (some of the lanes to here are very narrow and bendy!). The stone I estimated about 10 to 11 feet tall, about 6 feet at its widest; covered in lichen. One side very smooth, and one side very rough.

Bodbury Ring
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Apr 2004
Bodbury Ring submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Apr 2004. A small univallate hillfort, survivng from the Iron Age as a ring with a commanding view across the area. It possibly incorporates an earlier cross dyke.
The Ring immediately overlooks Carding Mill Valley, cared for by the National Trust, on the eastern edge of The Long Mynd, also under the NT's care.
Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) and The Lawley are to its east, and The Wrekin is obvious on the skyline to the north-east. All these are also the sites of hillforts and settlements.

Bodfeddan Inscribed Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Bodfeddan Inscribed Stone SH356745
Visited Tuesday 26th September 2000
This stone is behind a wall, immediately opposite a white bungalow on east side of A4080. We parked on a very wide verge further down the road.
The inscription is on the north side, and can be made out on the photo if not actually legible. The CADW guide to Gwynedd gives the inscription as CUNOGUSI HIC IACIT, meaning (The Stone) of Cunogussus. He lies here. It may have been a prehistoric monument, but is thought to be ...

Boltstone
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Aug 2007

Boltstone submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2007. Within the view presented of this field once stood The Boltstone. No trace survives, it seems, as the farmer destroyed it looking for fabled treasure beneath it in 1839 - so the story goes. Not far to the NW of Kinver hillfort, off Bannut Tree Lane, near the footpath shown cutting across the field.

Bosley Cloud (1) submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Sep 2006. Bosley Cloud Standing Stone (1) looking SE at twilight this morning. See main entry for details. This is a couple minutes down from the trig point, and the views up here are superb - to the Berwyns and Clwydian ranges, SE Staffordshire (look for the plumes of steam from Rugeley Power Station), to Manchester, Shropshire.
