Doddington Moor
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Northumberland)
Visited: Yes on 20th May 2010
Doddington Moor submitted by TimPrevett on 20th May 2010. Absolute nightmare to find - unplanned visit at the end of a surprisingly superb weather day. A 1:50000 map wasn't much help - the footpaths bore no resemblance to the map, so taking a grid ref from the map, and switching on the handheld GPS guided us here.
At first I was disappointed with the place - just one stone remaining upright - but discovering several other stones, and enjoying the pre-sunset glow, it was a pleasing finish to the end of a wonderful day. 12/04/10.

The Ringses Fort
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Northumberland)
Visited: Yes on 20th May 2010
The Ringses Fort submitted by TimPrevett on 20th May 2010. This was an unplanned visit to Doddington Moor at the end of a surprisingly superb weather day. It would have been a travesty to miss the late evening sun, so en route back to the campsite, we decided to have a plod around this moor.
We decided not to investigate The Ringses: livestock, wanting to bag some more rock art, tiredness, need for food and failing light all conspired. However, I did go near enough to get this image of the rings.

Roughting Linn Hillfort submitted by TimPrevett on 18th May 2010. These ramparts defining an Iron Age promontory fort are very easy to find - just off the track leading up to Goatscrag Hill, and near the more visited Neolithic Rock Art - from where they are clearly visible. 10/04/10

Gatcombe Lodge

Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2010
Gatcombe Lodge submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Jan 2010. Visited here on Boxing Day 2009 upon recommendation of my Prehistoric England guidebook from the 1970s which made no mention of Royal Estate which locals later told me about.
Ruined remains of a chamber on the more eastern end of the huge long barrow mound, and what appears as quarrying / robbing damage on the north side of the eastern end.
Advanced twilight by the time we got here (having watched sunset from the Long Stone just across the road) so very dark and use of flash imperative (also...

Long Stone (Minchinhampton)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 30th Dec 2009
Long Stone (Minchinhampton) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2009. Sunset 26/12/09 - an unplanned visit to a number of sites in the area.
No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin.
Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon.
A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...
