Skara Brae submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Aug 2006. Trying to get an 'in the monument' photo at Skara Brae is very difficult. Paths go around, over, but not in. Visitor numbers are too high to permit access. Some of the pathways over will have to be closed due to compaction of the neolithic walls underneath. If visitor numbers isn't enough to cause its own problems, the sea is beginning to eat around the coastal defences too. So, this is one of the few angles where one can try to capture an interactive photo.

Stenness submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Aug 2006. The mountains to the west of Orkney dominate the skyline of the Stenness / Brodgar area, and I found many monuments framed in their view by these. I assume one must be Ward Hill on Hoy.

Knowe of Dale submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2006. The enormous burnt mound on the N of Rousay. Look for the 'green lump' just below centre of the picture. The purpose of my visit to Orkney was to recce most of the major sites, but in true megarak spirit, I had to look at or at least photo any 'lesser' monuments I passed. This was one of them. I believe I am correct in attributing this to the Knowe of Dale - 2 months have passed since the picture was taken, but have extrapolated position from information on the picture, and a high scale map on C...

Saint Bertram's Cave submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Aug 2006. The situation of St Bertram's Cave - under the massif of Beeston Tor, and only accessible when the river bed has dried out. This photo is taken having walked about 1/2 mile along the riverbed. The cave is to the right (not visible here; other photos coming), but is easily missed. Speaking with a Brummie chap who's been coming to the area for some time, and my having left the area, his description of the cave I found didn't match. However, even the Trent & Peak Archaeological Trust couldn't agree...

The line is visible here on the LH corner of the picture; the group is on another part of the earthwork. Looking on the aerial pics, and on the ground, this can be traced from 3 o'clock to 12 o'clock outside the Great and NE circles. I did have an excellent picture of this from the ground, but have accidentally overwritten it!

Castle Bank (Radnorshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Aug 2006. A situation worthy of Lord of the Rings - Castle Bank in Radnorshire. Its situation is best appreciated from the hills surrounding its location in the vast natural amphitheatre. The univallate earthwork and stone ring are easily traced from this distance. A fine 3D fly-through model can be seen of this at Llandrindod Wells museum.

Gelli Hill Cairn B submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Aug 2006. This is not Gelli Hill circle, but yet more stones which could be mistaken for a ruinous circle, as per the comment on 14th August 2005. The 'real' Gelli Hill circle on a narrow neck of land, lower down more or less at the same level as the large fallen standing stone.

The diameter of this cairn is considerable, and I think must rank among the taller cairns I have visited. See pictures of the circle looking towards here for an idea of the size of the mound in context of the landscape.
