Kingston Russell Stone 3

Kingston Russell Stone 3 submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd May 2005. Peter Knight on P125 of Ancient Stones of Dorset refers to a stone on old OS 6" maps, near the Cross Dyke. The stone is not there anymore, however, this stone is in the corner of the field boundary to the SE of where the aforementioned stone was recorded.

Chalbury

Chalbury submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd May 2005. In the central to south east area of the inner hillfort, down to the entrance which is at the south east corner, there are many stones. There are two stones in the foreground here, and another just left off the picture. The Bincombe Bumps are visible in the distance... as are those blasted pylons!

Big Wood submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd May 2005. Walking to the Winterbourne Steepleton chamber down a valley, the Big Wood barrows become visible. There are at least 8, but only 2 are in this picture. There is no public access, so a distant shot is necessary.

Bronkham Hill

Bronkham Hill submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd May 2005. A huge amount of barrows, in many varieties and stages of depletion, run along the ridge of Bronkham Hill. This is approaching the largest barrow about midway along the hill (it *is* enormous), with some of the many Saxon Field Boundary Stones visible to the right.

Upwey Ridgeway submitted by TimPrevett on 24th May 2005. Most of the barrows here seem to be considerably worn down by ploughing, but are still numerous enough, and easy to spot as prominent ridges.

Ffridd Faldwyn

Ffridd Faldwyn submitted by TimPrevett on 6th Jun 2005. The westernmost extremity of the earthworks at Ffridd Faldwyn is at the left of the picture; it clearly shows how the natural contours of the hill were used to aid the siting of the defences. In the far distance is Corndon Hill, on the far east border of Powys into Shropshire. Even further away, to the left of Corndon Hill is The Stiperstones ridge. See main entry for more details.

Ffrith y Ddwyffrwd

Ffrith y Ddwyffrwd submitted by TimPrevett on 11th Jul 2005. A cairn in the "summer pasture of the two streams". It was actually the landowners who mentioned the cairn to me, as CADW had written to them making them aware that a decent cairn lie on their property. This is catching the north west of the kerbing, looking into Snowdonia. The bonsai effect tree is a helpful means of locating the cairn. A lovely, peaceful location. I visited (and found it late on Saturday evening) but the light was failing rapidly. I returned on Sunday morning, and must have ...

Castle Ring (Rorrington)

Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill. Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound. A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

Agglestone

Agglestone submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Aug 2005. Shropshire Traveller, Cassie the Dog, Teufel, Sharon, Izzy and Nat (front) at the enormous Agglestone - an outcrop of ironstone, which sits upon a mound within a vast natural amphitheatre. It used to be erect, and able to rock (ie. a logan stone), but the stone is now fallen. Attributed to Satanic throwing, and fancifully used for druidic rites, it is impressive. The rock is ironstone, and if you look carefully, in many places the rock does actually look like badly rusted metal. On the Dorset Me...

Coxall Knoll submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Aug 2005. Viewed from the A4113 - with this view in front, getting my camera was a must; unfortunately time did not permit a stop. This is a multivallate hillfort, wooded, with possible recumbent standing stone within the ramparts. Straddles the border of Shropshire and Herefordshire.
