Cuween Hill submitted by TimPrevett on 21st Jun 2006. This was the best feeling tomb on Orkney for me; darkness. No modern skylights. The solitude, and darkness are quite creepy, but it is superb. A very low crawl indeed, and investigating the four smaller chambers is a must. Best shots were without a flash, and I rather liked this self portrait just near the entrance. Summed up the feeling of this tomb, which some have called "The Tomb of the Beagles" due to the quanity of dog bones found here.

This two tier tomb was my other Orcadian favourite; visited about 10pm, the light level was still pretty good; a quick dash down the ladder with camera on timer to give a little more sense of scale to the monument. This is a site to spend time at; lends itself very well to a little mellow reflection.

Deepdale Stones submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Jun 2006. The surviving Deepdale stone, looking over Stenness Loch, in the direction of Brodgar, Stenness, and Maeshowe. Unstan tomb is just behind the stone on the first spur of land. This stone is about 6 feet high, but narrower than my hand.

Seven Ways cave - so named because of 7+ entrances into it. Sited above and to the west of Thor's Cave, it is accessed by returning to the path just before the last descent to access Thor's Cave, and then heading up! Elder Bush Cave had animal remains from Pleistocene period (exactly when is not given - not that helpful considering the length of the Pleistocene), with Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze & Iron Ages, and Roman human activity all noted. Long Low submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. Looking to the NNE of Long Low, new styal over the wall. Two interesting things about Long Low: 1) It is the only long barrow in Staffordshire, and 2) It has rounded ends, which are either described as two round barrows, or as rounded terminals. This is very reminiscent of the Broadmayne Bank Barrow in Dorset. Drystone walling intersects it in several places, and I styal is incorporated into one of the western side walls.

Amazingly, this was the middle of summer, and though this looks pleasantly warm - Orkney was the coldest place in the British Isles on this day. Fleece, gloves, and winter hat were needed.
