Raigmore
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Clava Cairn
Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 7th Oct 2006

Raigmore submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Oct 2006. My tripod was still packed, and I had the narrowest window of opportunity to visit this as the daylight faded on a dark, wet evening. Though relocated, this cairn is still impressive in itself, but I suspect some stones have been moved out from their positions. Taller stones (about 4 foot high), decreasing in stature around to the opposite side. This gives some idea of the cairn's contemporary context, with the large industrial estate to its east.

Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2006

Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Oct 2006. When visiting this site, if you bear in mind that the Victorians presented this site in accordance with their interpretation, you'll understand why the trees dominate. They believed the tombs here were Druid temples, and so they planted the area with Beech in the 1870s to reflect their notion of it as a Druidic Grove.

Hexentanzplatz (Thale)
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: Germany (Saxony-Anhalt)
Visited: Yes on 28th Feb 2007

Hexentanzplatz (Thale) submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Feb 2007. The Diabolical President atop the modern stone circle of Hexentanzplatz. The devilish figures are to mark the site's connection to Walpurgisnacht - May Day Eve - when diabolical deeds and rites were allegedly done. The very name means "Witches' Dancing Place". Now it is a tourist magnet, with spectacular views, a wondrous cable car journey as one of the means to reach the top (this is in the Harz Mountains), and no end of tat pertaining to Witches, Devils, Ghosts and Demons.

Twelve Apostles (Yorks) submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Oct 2002. This site is seriously under threat. The stone to the left, and following the ring around, another 2 stones (alternating) are supported by boulders at the base. The stone at the front had been moved several feet since June - compare with the photo taken by Col also posted on the portal.

Horncliffe Circle submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Mar 2005. When visiting the Horncliffe Circle, we disturbed an archaeologist doing some solitary surveying for Bradford Uni, and gave us a very helpful impromptu lecture. He is to the right of the circle, with Rich32, Baz, and Eileen.
He said he'd spied us earlier on some distance away at the Skirtful of Stones and thought "what's on here?" !
