Kelsborrow Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jul 2007. Kelsborrow Castle hillfort as viewed from the north west. Easily identified by the masts atop its summit. Fantastic views to South Cheshire, the East, and West into the Clwydian Range and chain of hillforts.

Castle Ditch Eddisbury

Castle Ditch Eddisbury submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jul 2007. As viewed from the east; notice the two figures atop, in the centre - these two gentlemen we bumped into, and they'd been there specifically to visit the hillfort, too.

Blacknoll Hill submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Jul 2007. The trig point mounting probably the easiest barrow to see on Blacknoll Hill. From there, though, the Five Marys, and numerous other barrows are visible.

Bunbury Hillfort (Alton Towers)

Bunbury Hillfort (Alton Towers) submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Jul 2007. People have been coming to the site of Alton Towers since at least the Iron Age. Within the grounds of the now Theme Park survive the slight earthworks of univallate hillfort, which makes use of the spur above the Churnet Valley. This view shows the site from the south, in Alton.

The Bargain Stone

Site Type: Holed Stone Country: England (West Midlands)
Visited: Yes on 28th Jul 2007

The Bargain Stone

The Bargain Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jul 2007. The holed Bargain Stone outside St Peter's in Wolverhampton City Centre. It is believed bargains, probably deals on wool traded from the Welsh Marches, would have been sealed with a handshake through this stone. It is thought to be a well weathered and broken gargoyle, with the hole having been the drainage. Don't miss the huge Anglo Saxon cross shaft nearby.

Boltstone

Boltstone submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2007. Within the view presented of this field once stood The Boltstone. No trace survives, it seems, as the farmer destroyed it looking for fabled treasure beneath it in 1839 - so the story goes. Not far to the NW of Kinver hillfort, off Bannut Tree Lane, near the footpath shown cutting across the field.

Armada Beacon submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Aug 2007. Viewed from the west, the Armada Beacon, which is also a bronze age burial mound - though there is nothing there to tell the steady stream of bank holiday tourists such information. A lovely area, and if you know where to find them (after 10 years of visiting, I do at last), many items of interest at Alderley Edge. See main entries.

Brenig 46

Brenig 46 submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Feb 2006. The more ruinous Brenig 46 Cairn, looking SW, with Portal user whatisthat in the background. Many of the cairns here have been reconstructed in situ. Obviously, this one has not been! Nonetheless, I'll often walk miles to see something like this, so still worthwhile. This cairn is situated north of a mediaeval Hafod - a summer grazing base, called Sion Lwyd. We kept wanting to call it Sian Lloyd!

Arbor Low 1

Arbor Low 1 submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Feb 2006. Visiting Arbor Low on Tues 21st Feb 2006, this circle has been 'burnt' into the centre of the monument with some chemical, killing the vegetation. Ivy, holly, lavender, and tea lights were left in the centre. Also planted nearby were some crocuses just beginning to flower. Surely *not* how leave a special place for other people?

Dyffryn Lane, Berriew

Dyffryn Lane, Berriew submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Mar 2006. If one looks carefully at the Dyffryn Lane henge site, especially with reference to the aerial image in the CADW guide to Clywd & Powys, three areas of corresponding contours can be detected. Look for curves and rises juxtaposed against the linear hedgerows. I have marked the picture here to help show off the distant curves near the field boundary, and a closer mark to show the contours nearer the front of the image. Walking down from Maen Beuno, just a couple minutes, look over the field opposi...

Chirbury

Chirbury

Chirbury submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Mar 2006. The location of the ring ditch, possible henge, west from Chirbury. Just an apparently empty field. The road to its south runs higher, and this photo is taken from the road. The crop mark was certainly in this field, and the approximate area has been circle. Size of the circle has no bearing upon the size of the ring ditch.

The Berth

The Berth submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Mar 2006. Iron Age Slave Chains. A gathering of the Berth Archaeological Group on Saturday 25th March had the enormous pleasure of a guided talk by Ernie Jenks (right) who carried out the dig here in 1962/3. One of the most unusual finds here at that time were some slave chains like those found at Llyn Cerrig Bach on Anglesey, showing the slave trade was alive and well in pre Roman Britain. Here Ernie demonstrates with his own reconstruction of the chains, using himself and Portal Contributor VirtHist...
