Eyam Moor III is quite unusual in that it is one of only five surviving free-standing stone circles in the Peak District. The circle itself is approximately 13m by 12.5m in diameter. There are six stones in total, two of which are recumbent. The stones are of the typical Derbyshire height (up to 0.75m) although the collapsed ones would almost certainly have been taller, perhaps over a metre when standing.In the middle there is a dumbbell-...

Log Text: Like Eyam Moor 2, visited after 25 years at least today; one that takes a bit of a hunt. A little further off the path than 2. Could identify one stone, and the large robbed out centre with some cairn material, but very water logged after thawing of snowfall. All carpeted with the growth of Heather, fern and bilberry. The grid ref from the OS app stood inside the circle was SK 23128 78872.

Fairy Oak submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Feb 2006. A large round barrow in grounds of private house on Fairy Road; barrow visible through gate. A large, hollow dead oak tree sits on its summit. An imposing monument for a garden! Royal Mail launched some fairy stamps here a few years ago.

Fairy Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2011. Long time coming in getting to this stone! Found out about it about 2005, and got visit earlier this week.
In Paul Devereux's book "Places of Power" pages 121-2 he records this diminished standing stone known as The Fairy Stone (AKA The Devil's Stone). It has a long tradition of fairy lights associated with it, and an account of someone walking past the stone one night getting the fairy lights stuck to his trousers. On getting home he found the trousers to be scorched - according to the tale.....

Log Text: The Fairy Stone Grid Ref: SJ372798 In Paul Devereux's book "Places of Power" pages 121-2 he records this diminished standing stone known as The Fairy Stone (AKA The Devil's Stone). It has a long tradition of fairy lights associated with it, and an account of someone walking past the stone one night getting the fairy lights stuck to his trousers. On getting home he found the trousers to be scorched - according to the tale... Or did he invent the story to explain why he maybe got his best trousers damaged? The stone is said to be situated close to a geological fault.

The westernmost extremity of the earthworks at Ffridd Faldwyn is at the left of the picture; it clearly shows how the natural contours of the hill were used to aid the siting of the defences. In the far distance is Corndon Hill, on the far east border of Powys into Shropshire. Even further away, to the left of Corndon Hill is The Stiperstones ridge. See main entry for more details.

Ffrith y Ddwyffrwd submitted by TimPrevett on 11th Jul 2005. A cairn in the "summer pasture of the two streams". It was actually the landowners who mentioned the cairn to me, as CADW had written to them making them aware that a decent cairn lie on their property.
This is catching the north west of the kerbing, looking into Snowdonia. The bonsai effect tree is a helpful means of locating the cairn. A lovely, peaceful location. I visited (and found it late on Saturday evening) but the light was failing rapidly. I returned on Sunday morning, and must have ...

The unmistakable artwork of the Wychwood Ale, "Fiddler's Elbow", which incorporates folklore motifs common to Stone Circles and Standing Stones - fairies, and a diabolical fiddler. Interestingly, there is a perished standing stone in Shropshire at a location called... Fiddler's Elbow, and just 5 miles east from there, is the fairy stone, where there was once a noted fairy encounter. My guidebook notes claims of two burials here with associated antler headware. It was a pleasing coincidence when standing upon the top of the western barrow, to be alarmed by a rustling in the adjoining field boundary, which revealed a startled stag, which then bolted the length of the barrows!

I used to work at the (now long closed) Q8 garage less than a mile away, and never payed any attention to the hill... oh to be able to send messages to yourself in the past!

Fontmell Down submitted by TimPrevett on 21st Jun 2006. A long cross dyke bisecting Fontmell Down, visible from Spread Eagle Hill road (used as an alternative Blandford - Shaftesbury route by many). The dyke is visible cutting across the hill here. A dedicated parking area, and public footpath give direct access to the centre of the dyke. Panoramic views to the west. One of 64+ cross dykes in Dorset.
