Parking a little way to the south in a layby. Near Black Lion pub. Access by a gate. The stone: I estimated 10 feet tall, covered with lichen.

Shop Farm

Shop Farm submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jul 2002. Shop Farm SH318813 Visited Tuesday 15th June 1999 Access: Park off the A5025 Valley to Cemaes road. I had to go through a farm, so I knocked and asked permission, and was granted it very cheerfully. The field was high in thistles in places, and quite spikey. It was also a silage field, so crap was everywhere. The stone: Relatively small - about 5 feet. Couldn't see much detail on it, as it was sprayed with silage, and iced with bird poo.

Trearddur standing stone

Trearddur standing stone submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jul 2002. Trearddur SH267788 Visited Tuesday 15th June 1999 Access: By a long lane off the B4545 south east from Holyhead. If you meet anyone else in a car along this lane, you are in trouble! Turning around was also problematical. Pulling back on to the main road was also a nightmare due to blind corners. The stone is to the left of the path in front of the windmill. The stone: small and dumpy, and the most densely lichen-covered stone I had seen - with tall stemmed plants over much of it. It overloo...

Llanfechell 2

Llanfechell 2 submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jul 2002. We walked to this site from site 1; turning right on to main road, and then left on to a curving residential road. Access was over a stile (on the verge of falling to bits when we were there). The stone is clearly visible in the centre of the field, not too far from a pylon. The stone: about 7ft tall, up to 2ft deep and about 4 ft wide. Not as much lichen as other stones, but characteristically decorated by the local bird population.

Ty Mawr (Nr Holyhead) submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jul 2002. Nr Holyhead SH254810 Visited Tuesday 15th June 1999 Access: Very good. On road outside of Holyhead. Visible from the road, we parked up, and over a stile, this signposted stone is no problem to find. I believe it is just down the road from a burial chamber. The stone: Much taller than me, maybe 8ft tall; sheep wool, bird poo and lichen decorated this one. It reminded me almost of a whippy ice-cream, twisted around to a conical point.

Bodfeddan Inscribed Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Bodfeddan Inscribed Stone SH356745 Visited Tuesday 26th September 2000 This stone is behind a wall, immediately opposite a white bungalow on east side of A4080. We parked on a very wide verge further down the road. The inscription is on the north side, and can be made out on the photo if not actually legible. The CADW guide to Gwynedd gives the inscription as CUNOGUSI HIC IACIT, meaning (The Stone) of Cunogussus. He lies here. It may have been a prehistoric monument, but is thought to be ...

Ty Newydd (Llanfaelog) submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Ty Newydd Burial Chamber SH345739 Visited Saturday 23rd September 2000 E Rhosneigr. Heading north from Barclodiad, turn left off A4080; it's a short distance up on the right on the Llanfaelog to Bryngwran road. Parking is on a narrow grass verge, followed by a short walk. From the road, this dolmen looked like a thin slab on top of two brick columns; in fact it is an enormous lintel stone, with some original supporting stones - but blatantly held up by these red brick uprights! Despite the o...

Druid Farm submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Druid Farm Standing Stone SH416751 Visited Tuesday 26th September 2000 South of RAF Mona; left off A5. This stone is another that had previously eluded me, but was pleased to have got it this time! A large layby on the left, so parking was easy. Take the gate into the 2nd field, and turn right. The stone(s) are parallel to the hedge on a rise. Two large stones lie a short distance from each other; I could not ascertain if they were once together but given their prostrate position, they ar...

Din Lligwy submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Lligwy Ancient Settlement SH497861 This settlement, NW from Moelfre and not far from the Lligwy burial chamber is huge! A short walk from parking space for maybe 3 cars, through woodland, this location can occupy a considerable amount of time exploring the nooks & crannies of this probable 4th century AD settlement.

The Three Leaps submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. The Three Leaps SH528784 Visited Friday 22nd September 2000 Just east of Pentraeth; off B5109 Pentraeth to Beaumaris Road. These three stones were in a quagmire of a field when I visited shortly after several days of unusually heavy rain (even for Anglesey 2 inches in 24 hours!). The Three Leaps are visible over a wall decorated with barbed wire; and The Three Leaps is somewhat of a misnomer The Three Hardly Visibles would be more appropriate! If anything, the stones are no more than knee h...

Hendrefor submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jul 2002. Ucheldref Burial Chamber SH551773 Visited Thursday 28th September 2000 SE Pentraeth, off B5109 Pentraeth to Beaumaris road. Two huge piles of stones in a field, basically! Another example of the decay of ancient monuments sad, but one supposes inevitable in many cases. The waves and contours in the rocks on these two are quite interesting to look at.
