Cerrig Pryfaid

Cerrig Pryfaid submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2004. The northern arc, and outlier, of Cerrig Pryfaid, early morning in late July. The very small stones of a complete and wide circle are hard to capture in one photo, so I decided to only focus on these, waiting for the sun to show through clouds, and was pleased with the result.

Cefn Maen Amor

Cefn Maen Amor submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2004. View to the north, higher ground not far away. Three stones can be seen here. Cefn Maen Amor stone circle has absurdly small stones, no higher than 1 foot, and easily lost under the bilberry and heather. Marked on OS maps as a cairn just to the north west of Maen Penddu standing stone, on a higher track, this is situated on a flat area, just beneath the highest terrain (as many circles are). Locating it was a matter of careful map reading, and looking for conspicuous bumps to the north of ...

Maen Hir (Conwy) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2004. A distant shot of Maen Hir; admittedly not the quality I like to submit - but it was the best, and arguably one poor picture is better than none.

Bwlch y Ddeufaen

Bwlch y Ddeufaen submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2004. The western stone has two associated stones, says Frances Lynch in her guidebook to the ancient and historic sites of the area. The middle stone is convincing in its relationship with the main stone - the most distant in this picture. I remain uncertain about the smaller whiter stone at the front of the picture, as it seems out of character with the other stone monuments in The Pass of The Two Stones.

Flower's Barrow

Flower's Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2004. The eastern end of Flower's Barrow hillfort as seen from East Lulworth. Time, and potential hazards did not permit an actual visit this time. I used to work at the (now long closed) Q8 garage less than a mile away, and never payed any attention to the hill... oh to be able to send messages to yourself in the past!

Five Marys

Five Marys submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2004. Sunset about 8.35 on Friday 13th August 2004, between two of the Five Marys. My guidebook notes claims of two burials here with associated antler headware. It was a pleasing coincidence when standing upon the top of the western barrow, to be alarmed by a rustling in the adjoining field boundary, which revealed a startled stag, which then bolted the length of the barrows!

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Conwy)

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Conwy) submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Aug 2004. One of another two cairns close to Barclodiad y Gawres. While the pylons are somewhat of an eyesore through this place of outstanding beauty, they do help to triangulate the locations of these cairns. This cairn is just to the south of the main track, below the pylons. It may not be obvious with this cairn when it is reached, but the ground will feel different! When walking around some cairns, you get used to the feel of the stones underfoot, and the extent to which they spread. The loc...

Caer Bach

Caer Bach submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Aug 2004. A view down on to Caer Bach, showing its prominent place above the Conwy Valley. This is taken ascending Tal y Fan mountain. There is a conspicuously white stone just left of centre; this stone is very large, and of different character than the other stones. In the valley below within the picture (but not visible) is the Roman port and fort of Canovium - an essential link in their North Wales strongholds.

Maen Ffordd Rufeinig

Maen Ffordd Rufeinig submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Aug 2004. A possible standing stone south of the road at SH694723, not far from the Roman Road, hence its name. There are many boulders around the area, but this longer stone has been erected, and due to erosion on the far side, subsided. A search of both CARN and Coflein databases reveals nothing further.
