Parsley Hay
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Cairn
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 17th Dec 2003
Parsley Hay submitted by TimPrevett on 17th Dec 2003. Parsley Hay Round Cairn SK144631. The remains of this cairn are visible, and even some kerb stones show around the perimeter of the mound. Be careful! When we visited, a herd of frisky young bullocks followed us with great curiosity, and were it not for Jez's excellent communication skills with such animals, we might have been trampled...! This was a risky visit. Thanks Jez ;-)

Carl Wark submitted by TimPrevett on 17th Dec 2003. Features at Carl Wark - notice the straight wall forming a right angle, bottom right, and the trough like boulder in the top left, and stone with a large hollow, in the centre. An intriguing site, to say the least!

Castle Ring (Staffordshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2004. Castle Ring SK045128
On the NW side looking to the W; there has been extensive clearance of trees and invading rhododendron around the ring; unfortunately, despite it being the highest part of Cannock Chase, the only part with a panoramic view, looks towards (Rugeley?) Power Station!
Castle Ring was actually recommended to me by a colleague at work who does not know of my stones / pre-history interest; she grew up in the Cannock area, and given we were making a trip to Stafford anyway, I'd...

Webb Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2004. The Webb Stone

There is not one stone in Bradley (pronounced Braid-lee), not two, but three! In the parish church of All Saints (which is on the highest part of the village, and is thought likely to be a Christianised pagan site), there is a local guidebook, "A Chronicle of Bradeley - The Story of an English Village 1000-2000AD" by William & Anne Wilkinson. Despite its subtitle, page 5 does have entries on its monuments prior to 1000AD.
These stones are in fact "glacial erratics...

Bury Ditches (Shropshire)

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jan 2004
Bury Ditches (Shropshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 6th Jan 2004. Bury Ditches is a wonderful example of a hillfort; the views are breathtaking, too. Until 1976, it was shrouded in trees - but a storm blew many of them down, and then the Forestry Commision felled the remainder of trees from the ramparts, revealing the oval-shape hillfort. Parking is to the south east side, where the fort is entered by a prolonged 'inturned entrance', adding additional chance of defence to any attackers breaching the fort's gateway. The more western entrance relies upon the usu...

Site Type: Round Cairn
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2004
Minning Low submitted by TimPrevett on 11th Jan 2004. This was a sunny day; the 2nd Derbyshire Stones Meet started off visiting Minning Low with a crisp blue December morning, by the timewe reached the site, took in the ambience and features, the clouds were leaden. Those of us fooled by the clear start were absolutely drenched on the way back. Minning Low is a great spot - and as the main entry says, can be seen for many, many miles around - thanks to the help of these Beech Trees.

Castle Ring (Derbyshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Feb 2004. The westernmost ditch, with dry stone wall on top of the tallest rampart.
The views to the N and NW from here are commanding, even on a grey day such as this. The town of Youlgreave was clearly visible, and the adjoining field to the west, which was open and 'rolling' very much reminded me of Wiltshire.

Titterstone Clee Camp

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 14th Feb 2004
Titterstone Clee Camp submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Feb 2004. Sitting to the NEE of Ludlow, the imposing figure of Titterstone Clee upon which sits the hillfort at SO592779. On this very murky day the greyness lifted just enough for me to be able to grab this picture of its silhouette from the top of St Laurence's Church Tower in the centre of Ludlow.
Titterstone Clee Camp is the largest hillfort in Shropshire covering some 28 hectares, though parts of it are now lost due to 100 years plus quarrying, thankfully now ceased. Two cairns, one mounted by an ...
