Larkbarrow Corner Stone Setting

Larkbarrow Corner Stone Setting submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jul 2002. Larkbarrow Corner Stone Setting SS823410 A square shaped setting (fourth stone broken off at ground level) with a flat stone in the middle. The only group of stones I have seem on Exmoor on an improved pasture where the sheep graze all the grass. Survived well considering it's on more intensive farmland rather than open moor. Photo, visit & text by Roger Gay, South Molton, Devon. Scanning & editing by Tim Prevett.

Dorchester, Tudor Arcade

Dorchester, Tudor Arcade

Dorchester, Tudor Arcade submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. When in Dorchester, I just had to check out the report in Bill Putnam's book "Dorset: The Prehistoric Age" that there were red markings in Waitrose Car Park, Dorchester, denoting sites of larger timber posts, which formed part of a timber circle. Quote "parts of a large timber circle have been discovered surrounding a projected area of around 380 metres in diameter. Apparently some 600 mature oak tree trunks would have been required for its construction. A radiocarbon date for it is about 210...

Maumbury Rings

Site Type: Henge Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Nov 2003

Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. This is Maumbury Ring SY690899, a henge not far out of Dorchester centre; Dorchester South train station is 3 minutes walk away, if that. The Romans adapted the henge into an amphitheatre, but it is an impressive monument nonetheless, especially given its proximity to the town - like IN the town! When I took this picture, the rain was chucking down; I was trying to shield the camera from rain, and so did not get any shots out of the relative cover of the nearly denuded trees.

Poxwell Cairn

Poxwell Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. The remains of a barrow atop a ridge, basically! Look at the ridge of any hill going west from here, and you will see examples of what this would have been! Other similar stones were in the area, either showing more barrows, or displaced from this location. There is a clear mound here, and even some kerbing left. It is a short deviation from the footpath, and we were observed for a while (without challenge) from a field to the N by a farmer in a red pick up with binoculars, so I am n...

Mount Pleasant (Dorset)

Mount Pleasant (Dorset) submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Mount Pleasant Henge SY710900 The subtle contours in the field give some evidence of the massive henge once in this field, equal in size to Avebury. This picture shows the south eastern curves, best seen in contrast to the horizon. Culverwell Mesolithic Site

Culverwell Mesolithic Site submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Culverwell Mesolithic Site I tried visiting this site on Saturday 1st November, but unfortunately was not able to gain access inside the main 'log cabin' part. I telephoned the number placed on the site (01305 861 576), and was greeted by a pleasant, well spoken lady. She was reticent to open up just for me, and also there had been recent heavy rain which she feared might adversely affect the site when combined with feet. She advised me to try again next time I'm in Dorset - which gives...

Poundbury submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. A distant view of Poundbury Hill Fort SY683912, from the car park next to the Dorset & Devon military museum (imposing castle next to the road on the E side of Dorchester centre) , about 5 minutes walk from the County Museum. Time did not permit me to visit this fort in person, but I was well chuffed when I got out the car to see some embankments to my NW. Finds and details of what is at Poundury are at the County Museum.

Broadmayne Bank Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Nov 2003. Came Wood Barrow Cemetery (SY699855) This cemetery extends from the wood, across the hill top, with a glorious view to the coast, including Chalbury Hill Fort, and the impressive Bincombe Barrows. This picture is taken on top of only one of three bank barrows (all in Dorset) with two round barrows to the left (N); the barrows go from behind the camera through the fields and into the wood.
