Remains of a hillfort on a riverside promontory. Extensive Bronze Age settlement recorded here from 2,000 to 1,500 BCE, with a much later Arab settlement in the 10th Century.
This is very much a case of I wish I had paid more attention to what was in front of me while I was there! The faded interpretive panels give an idea of what is there (much more in the links below), but alas, I did not look further as the westering sun gave a sense of urge...

Log Text: Visited briefly on a balmy and bright evening, May Day eve. Parking considerately on the roadside. Ruinous site but much to look at with the stones and earthworks still surviving.

The entry to the museum is located just off the Plaza Zocodover, downhill to the east through the arch and stairs.

Log Text: Really good museum, and only 3 Euros on my visit. Spent two hours in the extensive prehistory section on the ground floor and some of the next level. Well worth a visit, especially if a rainy day or other plans fall through. Should I be fortunate enough to visit again I look forward to going through later history having checked for any prehistoric additions or omissions on this visit.

Winterborne Kingston submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Jun 2026. I’ve wondered about this stone for many years. The grid reference we had, had it set back in a residential cul de sac. Checking on Google Street View really made it appear as if it would be in someone’s garden if it were there.
I was going to check on 2nd February 2026, but much of the village was flooded and roads closed as the Winterbourne river responded to sustained heavy rain.
I returned 2nd June on my next opportunity. I parked alongside the church, and walked around to Ware�...

Log Text: First visited perhaps 10 / 12 years ago. Long wanted to return. Did so again today but the place was so busy with bathers that any calmness and considerate photography was nigh on impossible. Midweek term time away from full moon recommend for atmosphere! Worth exploring the trees and bits of sunken paths a little higher up. The paths approaching the well from beneath were very muddy and slippery.

Wiltshire Heritage Museum submitted by dodomad on 16th Jul 2015. An early Bronze Age sun-disc from Monkton Farleigh in Wiltshire has gone on display for the first time at Wiltshire Museum. It is one of only six finds of sun-discs discovered and one of the earliest metal objects found in Britain. It was made in about 2,400 BC, soon after the sarsen stones were put up at Stonehenge, and is thought to represent the sun.

Designed to be a sundial, parts of that device remain in the centre, but no interpretive panel as of September 19 2025 on my visit. Also known as Levyhenge. The library sells a Tote bag to celebrate the landmark.

Two pairs of stones on the west and north west side are close but not close enough in my reckoning to give an accurate alignment for any key date, but are certainly sympathetic enough in intention to suggest paying attention to the solar transit through the year.

Log Text: Visiting very often over the last couple years, and have been less often over 16 years. today I visited the less visited end, and it’s quite a beauty of a cross dyke. No erosion from pedestrian, animal and wheeled recreation at the southern end. The north end is heavily cut across, and terminates in a very steep drop.

A semicircle of five gothic arched recesses account for five wells with the water arising in the hillside being channelled into a shallow stone trough and then down into a subterranean gravel bottomed pool. Log Text: Seven Wells, Bisley. As the name suggests, seven apertures of water flow into a magnificent presentation on the hillside. A number of older wells to the east still have water flowing. The incongruity is the whole area is hemmed in by parked cars, fabulous for disabled access but makes appreciation more difficult. The churchyard is a peaceful nature reserve too. All a worthwhile visit and a package of fascinating places in the village.
