Log Text: Walk with friends in the New Forest over heathland through an old bombing range, hunting down a few tumuli. This is a nicely formed round barrow just to the west of an old bombing range lookout building on the New Forest heathland at Ashley Cross. This area used to be the Ashley Walk bombing range during WW2 and is pockmarked with craters.

Log Text: Walk with friends in the New Forest over heathland through an old bombing range, hunting down a few tumuli. This large mound was marked as tumulus on the OS map, where we stopped to have lunch. This area used to be Ashley Walk bombing range during WW2 and is pockmarked with craters. I find out later that it is possible that this large mound is the earthcovered remains of the "Submarine Pens" targets.

Irons Well (Eyeworth) submitted by JimChampion on 28th May 2006. January 2006. A view downstream from the chalybeate spring on a dull winter's day. Red ferric oxide precipitates out in the water, giving it a very orangey hue. The waters join a stream which feeds Eyeworth Pond.

Log Text: New Forest walk with an expected lunch stop at Fritham, but the pub was closed. Leaving we go downhill to a large pond with some serious birdwatchers, before following the stream up the valley passing a muddy area with a fenced off spring with iron rust red water burbling out of it.

There are plenty of other small cave entrances and mine shafts about, so be careful !

King Arthur's Cave submitted by sem on 23rd Aug 2006.
This cave was inhabited from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, a period of over 50,000 years. Finds here include bone, flint and "imported" pebbles. Caves nearby have also yielded Beaker and Roman pottery, but as this cave was also used to extract iron in the 18th and 19th centuries much archaeological evidence has been destroyed.

Log Text: We walk on through the Lords Wood and arrive at a car park just above King Arthurs caves, to which we wander down. The caves are very interesting and we spend a fair while exploring in them, a longish cave to the right with a smaller separate entrance on the left, with a connection between them. Up in the car park is a noticeboard with all sorts of historical detail and stories about them.

Log Text: A bit further round the cliff face with lots of small entrances, and get to another large cave, again with a double entrance. One of the entrances leads into a substantial passage, the other a large chamber.

I spent the day walking round the entire coast of St Mary's visiting many ancient sites, before catching a ferry over to Bryher in the evening and getting picked up by the crew.

Nornour submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2003. The island of Nornour (SV 944147) is less than four acres in size and is joined to Great Ganilly at low tide. Yet the excavations of the early '70's revealed the remains of a major settlement which was occupied from the middle of the Bronze Age to the Romano-British Iron Age. Nornour clearly reveals the effects of rising sea levels, as this tiny scrap of land could never have supported such a thriving community. Normandy Down submitted by paulcall on 31st Oct 2006. A view of the delapidated easterly entrance grave looking north towards St Martin's. This grave gets trodden on a lot, as it is not normally covered in scrub like the other two. There are more stones to be seen here, but they are rather a jumble.
