Log Text: Day down to Penwith and start with a visit to Chysauster, which is looking magnificent on this bluesky morning, I just love it with all the wildflowers out. A lot of tidying work has been done around most of the houses, and some informative signs installed, along with a raised viewing area allowing a vision of the whole site. So fabulous to see this wonderful ancient village again.

Only 2 roofing lintels remain of this fogou associated with Chysauster Courtyard House village. The English Heritage response to the cost of restoration is sadly predictable.

Once in the site, over to the right hand side is the fogou, sadly fenced off and said to be unsafe, as it was when I came here in the 1980's. Shame it cant be made accessible.

Log Text: Next up is the snappily named Circle 275, which is to the south of the trackway in the long grass and heather. This is a lovely little circle of five stones with diameter about 3 metres, and in a most gorgeous setting with views out over the sea and up to the hills with the druids circle visible on the skyline. Is that a spiral carving I see on one of the stones?

Log Text: From the main road passing the village of Rogues, take the dirt track leading northwest from near the electrical transformer, opposite the road to the village. After 300 metres walking down this track, there is a little mound on the right side, of which the centre has been dug out. Inside can be seen the slab stone remains of a central burial cist. Probably never a full dolmen, but maybe a later iron age burial. None of the slabs are more than 50cm in length.

Log Text: A 2.5 to 3 metre tall menhir in a splendid position near the l’Ernée river below a lovely castle/chateau on top of a bluebell filled wooded hillock. It looks as if the top may have been broken off. There are several other large blocks of stone around I wonder if this was once a large boulder that fell from the sort of tor that the chateau is built on that was modified into a menhir.

Log Text: Just 50 metres further away from the Cloup de Layrou dolmen, is found a depression in the ground with a couple of cave like shelters. It has a signpost and was no doubt used by ancient man.

Log Text: A little dolmen found down a track a kilometre or so to the south of the village of Grèzes in Lot. The dolmen has a single capstone sat on two side slabs, and is 3 metres long by 1.5 metres wide. It faces east, at 095°.

Marked on the OS map as Chambered Long Cairn, the ruined remains of this tomb can be seen on a little hillock behind a house, beside the busy A438, overlooking the valley of the River Wye at Clyro, just over the river from Hay-on-Wye.
The remains of the tomb can be seen here from the northwest, and are the usual lumpy ground on top of the hillock. What looks like the remains of a stone chamber can be seen sticking out of the ground in the middl...

Coate Circle, wedged between Swindon and the M4 Motorway, visited with permission of the landowner 25/11/07. 5 Stones remain in an arc; 1 additional stone is to the SE towards a tree, and a further stone to the S. There is another stone to the W in a field in front of a barn, visible from the main circle.
An attempt to get something atmospheric from the ruinous circle...

Log Text: A few kilometres to the east of Liscuis can be found this nice allée couverte. Once off the busy N.?? Road, it is thankfully signposted, as it's a bit of a tortuous journey to get there. From a parking place up a steep lane, it's then several hundred metres of walking, some of which is overgrown, to find the monument.
Once you get there, you are immediately taken aback by what has happened to it, presumably as an act of christianisation, as a large double staircased calvary has been built right over the end of the chamber ! A most interesting feature !
The prehistoric remains are of an 11 metre long allée couverte, facing east at 095°, but with a lateral entry on the southern side near the eastern end. The main chamber is about 1.5 metres wide, up to 2 metres tall, and is paved, but has only the two westernmost capstones still in place. There is a little vestibule arrangement south of the entry, which is blocked off with two doorstones, which have an oval entrance carved into them, which is only just big enough for me to squeeze through, a very nice feature. A pity it was all a bit overgrown though.

Log Text: Travelling along the Chemin des Megalithes, I was wondering what would surprise me next, and the first thing I come to along this path has done it already. What on Earth is this ? Loads of big stones in a wood just off the track. At first it looked like another rectangle, but then I saw more stones. And more. And More.
Some of them are quite big and well over 3 metres tall. Some are lined up, perhaps about 10 rows, with the biggest stone in each row lined up perpendicular to each other, making a massive checkerboard formation. But they are not all in straight lines.
It is wonderful, I think I could spend hours here, but its already 6:00pm and I am getting further away, and not nearer to the van! Must get on. The Chaise de César is no doubt the large chair like menhir at the end of one of the rows. I couldn't get up there to have a sit down - its too high for me alone. I have just had a look at the maps, and none of this is marked on there.
