Cator Common Platform Cairn and Cist
Date Added: 24th Dec 2022
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Couldn't find on 6th Dec 2022
Log Text: Driving back to the cottage from Postbridge, thought I'd have a quick look for the remains of this cairn circle and cist, although I didn't have any details with me and no phone signal. It's not very accurately marked on the OS map I had with me, but I had a walk alonside the river in the boggy ground but it was getting dark and I could find nothing. Reading up on it when home, and its up on the slope somewhere.

Log Text: Just beside a little road northwest of Belvès but fenced in a garden and becoming overgrown this 1.5 metre high dolmen had several polished axes found within it. There’s a raised capstone on a couple of supports but its difficult to make out much more.
While sitting making notes here I got overrun and attacked by a lot of vicious little ants and am still paying the price for sitting down carelessly 12 hours later. Bastards !

Log Text: I drove round all the lanes I could find north of St Amande looking for something here but other than signs pointing to the farm of the same name I couldn’t find that farm. None of them seem to have names. I saw a poste van and was tempted to stop it and ask the postman. I was not helped by long winding lanes with nowhere to turn and various road works.
Cazarils tombe ovale 1
Trip No.205 Entry No.187 Date Added: 25th Nov 2020
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: France (Languedoc:Hérault (34))
Visited: Yes on 20th Sep 2005. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Cazarils tombe ovale 1 submitted by TheCaptain on 11th Oct 2007. This nice little oval tomb, a style found regularly round these parts, which does just what it says in the name, consisting of an oval of stones surrounding an oval chamber.
But as can be seen, this one is a bit special...

Log Text: Just to the north of the little town of Viols-le-Fort, take the little road towasrds Cazarils, and park by a little clearing in the wood after about 1.5 km, not quite at the top of the hill. Here there is a footpath into the woods, well marked with blue markers. Follow this zig-zag path for about 300 metres and you soon find this nice little oval tomb, a style found regularly round these parts.
The outer edge of the tomb is about 8m by 6m, with the inner chamber about 4m by 2.5m, and open to the north. the inner edge of the chamber is formed of many upright slabs, generally about half a metre high. At the back of the chamber is a carved stone (a copy, as the original is safely kept in a museum) with a sort of face carved into it. It is quite well known, I have seen it before in many places. This is a pleasant little place, with sheep bells clanging all around.

Log Text: About 50 metres further round on the footpath from Cazarils tombe ovale 1, is found this second oval tomb, but it is hiding in the bushes a bit. It is much bigger than the first, but does not have the wonderful carved headstone. The inner chamber is about 4m by 2.5m, and the walls are generally 1m high. It's cairn of stones is much bigger also, but unfortunately was getting very overgrown with bushes, making photos of the whole thing very difficult.

Cefn Bryn SW Cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 25th Jun 2013. A few hundred metres to the northwest of the Trig Point on top of Cefn-Bryn can be found what looked to me to be the remains of a ring cairn, but may in fact be a denuded platform or round cairn.
Viewed here looking northwest across the northwest coast of the Gower peninsula towards Burry Port on the far side of the River Loughor estuary.

Log Text: Having done my research beforehand, I now know to head up and over the nearby ridge to the south and there is the lovely ring cairn, about 10 to 12 metres diameter. It doesn't stand very proud of the ground, and has quite wide "walls".

Ceinturat Menhir submitted by theCaptain on 31st Jul 2012. These days it is in a little woodland clearing, surrounded on one side by oak forest, the other by gorse and bracken. Shaded by the trees as it is, it looks like it is a stone tree trunk with branches growing out of it.

Log Text: "Megalithes" are signposted to the south of Montemart, and following these signs takes you first to a parking place from where a 700 metre walk to the Ceinturat Menhir can be taken. I was surprised by how big it is, as it is taller than 5 metres and looks like the top has been broken off. It has a flat north face, but a rounded southern face, which faces downhill. These days it is in a little woodland clearing, surrounded on one side by oak forest, the other by gorse and bracken. Shaded by the trees as it is, it looks like it is a stone tree trunk with branches growing out of it. A nice start to the day.

difficult to find in the dense woodland are two large lumps of rock, with possibly a third.

Log Text: After a fairly long struggle to find these which are marked on my ign map I eventually found a sign pointing through the woods to menhirs 180 metres but not very close to the position on the map. The best I found was two big lumps of rock on a hillside which looked very much like they may be natural rocks to me. Its possible there is a third nearby. I could not get a gps fix in the dense woodland.

Centre Les Landes submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Jun 2007. The Monteneuf visitor centre, at the Pierres Droites, has many activities days.
This is a competitor in the prehistoric spear thrower (Propulseur, or Atlatl)competition.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: A visitor centre has been set up amongst the Pierres Droites near to the village of Monténeuf, which has interactive displays which show erection of menhirs, building of neolithic homes, crop growing, archaeological excavations etc etc. Around the centre have been found several hundred megaliths, with most of the stones was only discovered in the last 20 years after a forest fire.
When I visited in July 2005, they were holding a round of the world "prehistoric shooting" championships, which included both bow and propulseur categories. On the hot sunny Sunday afternoon of this weekend event, the whole place was very busy, with all sorts of demonstrations in full swing. There was basket weaving, corn grinding, pottery making, stone polishing, mud wall making, flint knapping, fire making, cookery, archery, spear throwing and many other things, all of which the public was invited to have a go at, especially the children. What an excellent place this is.
The Atlatl (propulseur) competition is very impressive. i wondered just how much better than a plain spear it is, and was well impressed with both the power and accuracy achieved by many of the competitors. There was one chap that not only nearly hit the bull every time, but launched his spear so hard it went halfway through the target. I got lots of pictures of this, including the organiser with whom I had conducted a little interview with yesterday. Well worth going back for.

Log Text: Newly built (opened 2019) visitor centre, shop and interpretive trail, at the edge of the village of Guadalupe on the Rue do Cromeleque, before the road turns to a dirt track leading out to the Almendres sites. As well as the Almendres megaliths, the shop and building is heavily influenced by the local cork bark tradition, and features many cork products.
I could have spent much more time here, but we had to get to Evora to check in to the guesthouse.

I dont believe this would be at the location given on the Portal sitepage, but more to the northeast, around SX697830, as our walk first took us south along the ridge to Hookney Tor and Grimspound

Log Text: At the bottom end of the Challacombe stone rows, most of the stones are showing white amongst the heather. It is all a bit of a jumble, no doubt many of the stones moved during the extensive mining here, several of which seem to have been placed in surprising positions, with a sort of semicircular feature to one side.

Most of the stones are showing white above the heather and it looks splendid. The bottom end is a bit of a jumble, no doubt many of the stones moved during the extensive mining here, several of which seem to have been placed in surprising positions. Up the hill to the south, its a clear treble row, which can be followed up the hill to the large 2m tall stone at the top. Back to the car, and drive round to the Warren House Inn for a pint of Black Tor "Pride of Dartmoor" and a look at its everlasting fire, before going to sit outside admiring the views, where I can make out some of the stone row and Grimspound. Must be one of the best pub views in southern England. Fabulous.
