Carn Gluze

Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 24th Feb 2004

Carn Gluze submitted by TheCaptain on 24th Feb 2004. Ballowall Barrow / Carn Gluze. July 2003
Difficult to get a good picture of, but I quite like the way this one shows the position of the barrow with respect to the clifftop views.
Others will probably have better pictures of the structure itself

Log Text: Big walk round the Botallack mines area today, starting off by walking up to the top of Carn Kenidjack. Some lovely cattle grazing up here, who don't seem to mind my presence as I greet them all. I am not convinced of anything other than natural up here. Everything is hazy up here today with a sea mist rolling in, so I miss out on the views.
Carn Lês Boel
Date Added: 17th Jul 2023
Site Type: Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Saw from a distance on 14th Jun 2023
Carn Lês Boel submitted by JimChampion on 29th Aug 2008. August 2007. View across Mill Bay towards the Carn Lês Boel headland. The shallow inner ditch and bank are quite clearly highlighted by the low evening sunlight - look just above the shadowy chasm. There is a narrower, fainter outer ditch that reaches to the top left of the chasm - possibly an unfinished outer defence.

Log Text: Walk from St Levan along the coast path, through Porthgwarra and out to Gwennap Head. Keep going right round to Carn Barra where I stop for my pasty, overlooking Zawn Kellys to Carn Lês Boel and Lands End. I spend ages watching the flocks of seabirds on the sea, no doubt all above shoals of fish, fulmars soaring around in the coves and their nests on the cliffs, and lots of choughs busying themselves between feeding on the clifftops and taking food to their nests on the cliffs. Its great to see the choughs back here again. Fabulous.

Log Text: From the hilltop southern cairn, the northern cairn can be seen about 100m away down the slight slope with Blorenge and Ysgyryd in the distance. But the ground underfoot up here is so bad for walking across, no path, knee deep heather, broken stone, muddy holes and adders, that I didn't risk my ankles in going over to it.

Log Text: A visit Raglan Castle, and as it's such a lovely day and seeing the hills on the horizon, I just had to go up top of Blorenge and walk along to the highly visible Carn y Defaid. It's a terrible path underfoot from the Foxhunter car park, all a jumble of rocks, bog and heather. The hilltop southern cairn can be seen from miles around, and equally, on a day like today, can see for miles from it. To the north is the great whaleback moutain Blorenge, while to the northeast, over Abergavenny, can be seen the broken hill of Ysgyryd. Superb, but I do remember being here in the past, all cold and wet with about 10 yards visibility!

Log Text: Blimey, its almost sunny. In fact it is sunny at the tops of the mountains. I'd better get a move on. A bakers van comes round the camp site which is a help. Put last nights wet stuff outside to dry off. Leave the campsite by 10:00 and drive to Benque. Unfortunately I cannot park where I want to. Look at the maps and go elsewhere where I can park at the edge of the main road a bit further up the valley, and start walking up a different path. It is now warm and sunny, so I change back into shorts and techno shirt. Pack bag, boots on and away by 10 to 11.
The route is along a flat track at first, and then it joins with the path I would have been on at the edge of the village. The path is now quite steep, zig zagging up the side of the mountain, but its a well used track with occasional signs. I get to the first set of cromlechs at 11:45. The views from up here are beautiful all around, and there are all sorts of big birds flying around, and mushrooms etc. There are a few of the autumn crocus flowers looking to poke their heads out and bloom. The only other people around are 4 English people, who I saw parking where I had wanted to in the village. Cars will fit there, but not camper vans.
The 4 English people join me at the circles and we chat a bit. They are out walking and looking at the birds. Probably about my age and out here on a months holiday! There are lots of vultures about just above us. There is a sheep carcas further up the hill that they are after, but there is a dog up there also, so the vultures are circling, waiting... They have counted over 60 of them. A fantastic sight.
On the way back from here there are lots of those lovely flat thistle flowers out, and also some of the autumn crocus. This morning they were just pushing their heads through the soil, but now they are in full flower. Beautiful. It was a wonderful few hours up here in the hills, but now I have to get on. The weather has now cleared enough that I can see some glaciers up on the distant ridge. I get back down to the van just after 4:00, and decide to move on. I decide to head for Spain, over the Col du Portillon, which doesn't seem too far up, but its a massive drop down the other side into Spain.

Carnbean Barrows submitted by Bladup on 1st Jul 2020. Carnbean Barrow SW38283313., Well well well, who'd have thought there'd be a undeniable large disc barrow here in this part of sunny Cornwall, it even has it's little central mound intact, I've been here before but it was very overgrown but now it's clear (well done the clearers) and blooming heck I never expected to see this!!!

Log Text: On the way back from another failed attempt to get to Goodaver circle, I decided not to completely give up, and went for a look for the stone row, in an open field to the west of the northern corner of the forest. It's open access land, and easy to enter the field after taking the track westwards from the radio mast. I first found what looked to be the remains of a hut circle, and then found the stone row. Its clearly an ancient stone row, with a few fairly big stones, but most of them are fairly small. The ground here was very rough and dry after such a prolonged period with no rain, but looks like it gets boggy and well trodden and churned up by the cattle in the fields.

Carreg Samson, Abercastle submitted by Horatio on 13th May 2019. In a dramatic clifftop location just outside the pretty port of Abercastle stands a Neolithic burial chamber known as Carreg Samson. The name translates as 'Samson's Stone' and refers to the legend that St Samson placed the huge capstone in place using just his little finger.
The dolmen is composed of seven upright stones topped by a huge capstone. The capstone is over 4.5m long (about 15 feet) and 2.7m wide (9 feet). The capstone is actually balanced perfectly on just 3 of the 7 support st...

Carrières dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 10th Mar 2009. In the woods beyond an old disused little quarry, can be found the remains of this dolmen, with its massive backslab giving its position away.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Just outside the little town of Viols-le-Fort, to the west, take the road south towards the quarry. After 300 m the road either enters the quarry or goes around to the left. Park here. In the woods just to the right, beyond an old disused little quarry can be found the remains of this dolmen, with its massive backslab giving its position away. It is in a large mound of stones, and got lots of rubbish strewn about all over it.
The massive chamber is about 4 metres square, and apart from the 6 metre by 3 metre high backslab, is made using drystone vaulting. There seems to be an anti-chamber, 2m by 2m before an entry passageway opening west at about 250°, bu it is a bit of a mess at this end. There appears to be a ring of large slabs around the outside. Apart from all the junk, this would be a pretty impressive monument, and would be a prime contender for some sort of restoration.
