The Beeracres Stone
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Nov 2004

The Beeracres Stone submitted by thecaptain on 11th Nov 2004. The Beeracres Stone
My new standing stone, almost 6 feet of best Cornish Granite, recently erected in the garden of Beeracres.
Despite a nightmare start to things when getting it delivered, we managed to move it into place and erect it last Sunday afternoon fairly easily, and had a nice little celebratory event.
I think it looks nicely at home here.

Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Italy (Emilia-Romagna)
Visited: Yes on 20th Sep 2008

Terramara di Montale submitted by thecaptain on 20th Sep 2008. In a little park area outside the church, faint remains of the ancient ditch and embankment can be seen, and there is an enclosed area where excavations were carried out in the 1990s, and many of the finds are displayed in here. However, it has a glass front, and so something of what is inside can be seen at all times.

Log Text: Back to the overgrown sites again ! This one is down a lane then across a field before finding it in the undergrowth. Probably once upon a time this was quite a good dolmen with an entry passageway, there is a 3 metre diameter chamber with capstone, and a few stones of the entrance still standing, along with at least one capstone surviving.

View to the northwest from the enclosure which is built on a little promontary just to the north of the Kingston Russell stone circle. There is also a cairn or two here in this place with a truly wonderful view.
Up the valley to the right leads to the valley of the stones. To the left, westwards down the valley gets you to the sea and the Golden Cap.

Log Text: A day to myself, and decide to go to Totnes, but first go the scenic way through Buckland, then decide to walk out to Buckland Beacon for a look at the Ten Commandments stones. The views from here are fantastic, right down to the sea all around the south, including right along the Teign estuary. Great to spend time looking all around the north and west trying to figure out all the various tors and bits of Dartmoor previously visited. Magnificent. There is a very interesting series of Boundary stones to the north, one of which looked to me like an old cross originally.

Having cycled to this site with the others, all I got was scorn due to the state of the remains. I think it was here that the phrase HOC was first coined. I thought it was interesting.

Log Text: Before heading up to White Moor, I look for the kerbed cairn Paul has made a sitepage for, over by the marked Boundary Stone. I firstly find the boundary stone, standing proud of the long grass, and it seems to have been mounted on a large stony area. I read later that this has been declared as one of several cairns located in this area, and it makes sense to me.
Tautavel Musee de Prehistoire
Trip No.205 Entry No.85 Date Added: 28th Oct 2020
Site Type: Museum
Country: France (Languedoc:Pyrénées-Orientales 66)
Visited: Yes on 12th Sep 2005. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 4

Tautavel Musee de Prehistoire submitted by thecaptain on 16th Dec 2005. Museum in the village of Tautavel in the French departement of Pyrénées-Orientales, which is the home to one of the oldest known European Humans.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I only came here to get a photo, assuming the museum would be closed on a Monday, but it was open, so thought I'd better go in. The museum contains hundreds of thousands of items found at the nearby Caune de l'Arago cave, where the remains of a human skull was found in July 1971, the skull being known as Arago item 21. Since then many others have been found, along with items of their food, tools etc etc. The finds have been dated to about 450,000 BC, and thus are amongst the earliest remains of humans found in Europe.
Tautavel man lead a life of hunting, and this is all displayed here also, with remains of many animals and suchlike which would have been around at that time. Tautavel man, however, is not an ancester of ours, as he lead up to Neanderthal man, which died out 30,000 years ago, to be replaced by Cro Magnon man.
While this should all have been very interesting, I have to admit to finding many of the displays quite dull and repetitive, and the awful American voice talking down to me in the audio guide was enough to put me right off. The whole museum seemed a bit 1970's and showing signs of age. The displays mostly consisted of bones and tools in glass cases, video presentations of certain things, and staged scenes using mannequins, with lots of keep off and don't touch signs. In my recent travels, I have seen many much better presented museums which bring the subject to life.
