Roughtor well submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jan 2015. I am amazed that I never knew of its existence in the past (ah, I see, rediscovered and restored in 1994).
A nice stone trough and well front has been built over a fairly vigorous spring quite high up on the Roughtor Massif, approximately halfway between the main Roughtor top and the Showery Tor top on the north-western hillside.

Log Text: This was a nice find, and I am amazed that I never knew of its existance in the past. A nice stone trough and well front has been built over a fairly vigourous spring quite high up on the Roughtor Massif, approximately halfway between the main Roughtor top and the Showery Tor top on the northwestern hillside. It is fairly easy to find amongst all of the other natural clitter on a clear day, as the stream which runs out from it can be seen at is traces its way down the hillside. The well can be simply found at the top of this! There were a few little offerings strewn amongst the stones on the afternoon of my visit.

Log Text: Around the top of the Roughtor hilltop, from Little Roughtor in the northeast to the main Roughtor summit in the southwest, can be seen the remains of a stone bank encircling the hilltop. In places this stone bank remains very significant, but in other places, particularly on the steeper slopes, it is less significant, probably due to stones falling off and rolling down the hillside amongst all of the other clitter. There are remains of a few cairns and hut circles within this enclosure.

No doubt this place was of great significance to the ancient people who lived around here.

Log Text: A couple of miles to the west of Inverurie, in some very rural farmland, is the Easter Aquhorthies stone circle. There is a little parking area from which it is a few hundred metres walk aup the lane to the circle. While I was visiting, the local farmer was out with the BT men having his line fixed or adjusted so that he can get a proper broadband connection, if only I could get such a service. The beautiful stone circle, almost complete, is contained within a little circular walled enclosure, a bit like Boscawen-un, which although it has probably helped the survival of this sublime place, makes photography difficult. Unlike many of the others I have seen today, this one is well cared for by the Scottish authorities, and all looking very tidy. Beautiful.

Log Text: Walk all the way around the coast to Harlyn, where I think I pass the ancient burial grounds. Now desperate for a pint I am expecting to find the pub once up off the beach by the bridge. I found no signs of what I remember as a little museum with remains, or indeed, more annoyingly at the time after a long hot walk, the pub, as everything is all being rebuilt into lots of expensive appartments, so a good thing I did carry a pasty, but I really could haver done with a pint. Very tempting to gatecrash in on a large wedding event at marquees in the fields nearby!

Log Text: A long walk round Trevose Head starting at Constantine. I cross Constantine Beach, and climb up for a look on the islet between Constantine and Booby's beaches. Is this remains of a cairn? Moving on, I drop down into Booby's Bay, hoping to see the remnants of the S.V. Carl shipwreck, but the sands have covered most of it up again.

Log Text: Standing stone, and a couple of prostrate slabs and stumps on Cardinham Moor, beyond what is described as the southern end of the stone row. From the leaning pillar which is described as Stone 1 of the stone row, I could see another stone standing to the south, so went for a look, where I found a couple more. These stones are further to the south, and in as good a line as the rest of the stone row (its not straight, is it!). They also show up on the detailed OS maps (about SX 131 712). Which begs the question. Is the leaning pillar really the southern end of the stone row? Is this stone a separate entity? Or could it be a continuation of the stone row?

Log Text: Parked at the rest area beside the A30 near Temple and walked southwest across the moor to exploor Cardinham Moor stone row. Pass beside the large pond, no doubt some mining remnant, then can see a stone standing up on the hillside. Once up there a few more come into sight. Its not straight, is it !! I follow it south to a large leaning pillar, which I later see described as Stone 1, the southern end. However, I see another stone standing over on the slopes of St Bellarmin's Tor, so went for a look, where I found not only the standing stone, but also couple more, in as good a line as the rest of the row. They also show up on the detailed OS maps (about SX 131 712). Back to the car then go for a couple of halves at the Blisland Inn.

Log Text: There are two large green round cairns up here, each with several large stones around the edges, possibly kerb stones. There should be a third cairn somewhere, but its not so obvious. Time to get back, making sure I pass the stone row end again, having a look for any others I could find further east, but nothing.

Log Text: Further south can be seen another standing stone at the top of the hill, which to get to means passing over a shaped stoney area, perhaps cairns, perhaps some long fallen buildings. The big stone stands proudly, a bit taller than myself. Near to it are two other similar stones, now prone on the ground making a short row of three.

Log Text: A mixed weather forecast for today, and after some horrendous rain, it stops so I go for an extensive exploration of Trehudreth Down, with its standing stones and stone row. Apart from the standing stone to the south, nothing much is readily seen, so I resort to using my GPS, and eventually find a long fallen stone, possibly the northeastern end. I find about 5 more stumps and little stones spaced out in a southwestern direction, but then anything of the stone row is hard to find, and a large herd of cattle with their young, mean I keep away from much of the central part it. I pass well clear of the cows and further on I find a sort of stone setting, which I think is what I have called Trehudreth Downs B stone setting. Further west, and a see about half a dozen evenly spaced stones in a haphazard row descending the slope, which matches to the western end of the row on the map. Without seeing anything between the eastern and western ends, it wouldnt surprise me if it was two seperate rows, as the two ends do not really line up with each other.

Log Text: Its not too far from York, so I went for a look at the Devil's Arrows, which were easy to find. Despite a new housing estate now encroaching and the very nearby A1 and A1(M), these are still at large in fields and feel wild and free. All three stones are magnificent and monsters with interesting rainules running down them. Magnificent.

Log Text: A day to Scarborough from York, so made sure of a visit to this and Wetwang on the way. I was expecting to be slightly disappointed after all the French monster menhirs I have seen, but in actuality I was impressed. Its huge, and obviously well shaped. Only disappointment is the metal hat, and that its "caged" in the churchyard, rather than being wild and free. Also another small stone and cist grave in the corner of the churchyard. Lovely.
