Castlehowe Scar Stone Row submitted by MonumentMan on 30th Sep 2019. Castlehowe Scar circle, due east uphill from the Thunder stone.
After looking south over the wall, the stone row was found and extended some 400yards down to the river/beck across the fell?
20 yards to the west of Castlehowe circle lies a smaller circle of 1ft high granite boulders buried in the grass?
Is this stone row contemporary with the circles at Castlehowe??
or have the quarry re-instated this line? It looks interesting but any
thoughts on this complex please

Log Text: Just to the west of the stone circle is what appears to be another rubble cairn surrounded by low boulders, with what seems to be a row or avenue of stones running south down a little valley across the open land.

Log Text: Continuing on south and I park near the large flooded quarry, from where it’s a short walk uphill to the east to the top of Iron Hill. The northerly circle is a ring of stones surrounding a large round tumulus which is bisected by the field wall which runs right over the top of it. On the southern side, the circle of kerbstones is almost complete, but I could see nothing on the northern side, but couldnt gain access to have a close look.

Log Text: Continue south to Oddendale, where plenty of parking is available on the open moor. Walking south, and below the trees beside the wall just past the farm entrance is found a small circle of stones with a central cist structure. A lovely little monument, and makes me wonder how many more of these there must have been all over these hills.

Giants Grave, Penrith submitted by nicoladidsbury on 12th Feb 2005. Giants Grave Viking Crosses and Hogback stones
The 'Giants Grave' is a collection of ancient grave stones comprising two 11' high stone crosses and four hog-back stones. An excavation of the 'Giants Grave' showed a skeleton underneath with a sword. The four hogback stones surrounding the grave are said to represent wild boar he killed in nearby Inglewood Forest.

Log Text: An evening in Penrith, and despite thinking I knew something like hogback stones were here, I missed seeing the Giant's Grave in the dark with the churchyard gates closed. But I did see the Giant's Thumb carved cross and take a picture of it from the nearby path.

Log Text: I now walk south along the trackway past the rough limestone pavement before heading out southwesterly across the open land to find the Oddendale circles. Quite hard to see at first, then they come into view, the stones hiding amongst the long grass. Upon closer inspection it is a really fabulous site, a large outer ring of big boulders surrounding a smaller ring with possible remains of a cist at the centre. There are several outlying stones around the large circle, some possibly forming an avenue to the northeast. Its lovely here with huge views all around and nobody else within sight. I spent quite a bit of time up here before heading back to the car and onwards to Penrith.

Tottiford Reservoir circle submitted by TheCaptain on 12th Sep 2022. View of the circle seen from the Mound

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. Despite overnight storms making the lakebed very wet, slippery and muddy, I was able to walk to the circle, and around most of it.
In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge and to the northwest of the obvious lage dry mound, can be seen a few stones of a stone circle. I was able to get across the mud to the nearest stone, and once there it seemed that the circle was arranged around the outer edges of another smaller dry mound. I got to walk around most of the circumference of the circle without too much mud, and noted about 8 to 10 stones, which would have made up a decent circle with regularly spaced stones.
Trying to get across to the large dry mound I had no chance, as there was deep wet mud between the two, presumably an old river course separating the two, so I had to go back the way I had come across the mud from the eastern shore of the reservoir.
Despite getting very wet and muddy feet, and slipping several times, I managed to make it back to dry land without falling flat in the mud! I was really pleased with myself for getting to visit this circle, as I never thought I would even see it, let alone be able to have a proper visit.

Log Text: To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. There seemes to be a fairly regularly spaced row of these stone piles along much of the eastern shoreline. Watching the Time Team program later and they showed that these were more likely relatively modern stone piles, possibly something to do with when the reservoir was being created.

Log Text: In the southern part of the reservoir, is an obvious large mound, which is all sandy rather than dark mud covered. No doubt this has been some form of island at some time. To the northeast of this mound is the remains of a stone sircle, and then further away a single stone row. To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. To the east of the mound, between it and the eastern shore, can be seen several round piles of stones, which may be ancient cairns, but I am not too convinced, as they look neither big enough, and seem strangely spaced and positioned in what would have been a wet position. Watching the Time Team program later and theyfound much mesolithic flint on the mound, suggesting it had been in use for millennia.

Trendlebere Down submitted by AngieLake on 10th Aug 2010. First view of Trendlebere Down stone row on approach from the road. Orientated N-S, the south end is to far right here.

Log Text: Getting from the road to find this row is a bit of a struggle through gorse and heather, and I initially found it hard to find. But there it is, not quite where I was expecting to find it, but as so often with a path running down beside it, and it has had much of the growth mechanically cleared from it. The large cairn at the top is completely overgrown, as is the top of the row, but I found a few fairly large fallen stones hidden underneath the overgrowth. Further down, the row becomes more cleared, but the stones are smaller, mostly flat on the ground, and many have been substantially damaged by the mechanical machines used to clear the gorse and heather. The bottom end again becomes lost in high vegetation. Amongst the disturbance is a large stone, facing across the rows, which looks as though it may have once been a terminal blocking stone. All in all a disappointment.

I didn't make notes, and from memory I was able to identify about 10 stones in the mud. Just a quick forst photo uploaded from my phone. In time I will sort out what I have taken.

The northern single, and double southern stone rows were clear, but surrounded by too much wet mud to walk along them for any distance.

Log Text: With the drought of 2022 now exposing the stone circle in Tottiford reservoir for only the second time in 150 years, I went down for an exploration. In the southern part of the reservoir, below the footpath causeway bridge, can be seen a single row of stones progressing across the muddy lakebed in a westerly direction from the eastern shore. About 50 metres in length, several regularly spaced large stones can be seen. Trying to get close to the main part of the row, and to walk along its length proved futile, as the mud was very deep and wet. I saw nothing which really resembled a terminal cairn.

In the southern part of the reservoir, is an obvious large mound, which is all sandy rather than dark mud covered. To the south of the mound, which is elongated in this direction, can be seen remains of a double stone row extending further south into the waters of the lake. It was too wet and muddy for me to get to any of the obviously remaining stones, and the water level of the reservoir was such that some of the stones were surrounded by water, and more could be seen further south and running below the water level. What stones I could see looked regularly spaced. On the sloping lakeshore, there are many large stones laying around, of which I have no doubt many have been removed here from the stone rows.

Log Text: A mixed weather forecast for today, and after some horrendous rain, it stops so I go for an extensive exploration of Trehudreth Down, with its standing stones and stone row. Apart from the standing stone to the south, nothing much is readily seen, so I resort to using my GPS, and eventually find a long fallen stone, possibly the northeastern end. I find about 5 more stumps and little stones spaced out in a southwestern direction, but then anything of the stone row is hard to find, and a large herd of cattle with their young, mean I keep away from much of the central part it. I pass well clear of the cows and further on I find a sort of stone setting, which I think is what I have called Trehudreth Downs B stone setting. Further west, and a see about half a dozen evenly spaced stones in a haphazard row descending the slope, which matches to the western end of the row on the map. Without seeing anything between the eastern and western ends, it wouldnt surprise me if it was two seperate rows, as the two ends do not really line up with each other.
