Log Text: This large round barrow can be found on the top of the Cotswold escarpment just into the woods at the northwest corner of the country park / picnic area, a couple of hundred yards to the north of Nympsfield long barrow. It is said to be a really unusual round barrow from the Neolithic, and not a Bronze Age round barrow at all! The top of the barrow has a very large depression in it, where it has been cut into in the past. From Grinsell - Barrows in England and Wales, “a boat-shaped hollow lined with dry-stone walling, in which were the remains of up to 44 individuals, mostly unburnt”. There are several fairly large bits of stone laying around nearby, which once may have formed part of the structure.

Randwick Long Barrow submitted by thecaptain on 13th Apr 2009. On the left of the picture here, at the northeastern end of the barrow, are the remains of a horned entrance with forecourt and a single stone lined chamber.
Remains of this chamber are supposedly still to be seen, but the barrow is heavily overgrown here, making any stone remains invisible to me when I visited.

Log Text: This massive Long Barrow is to be found within Standish Wood, at the top of the hills to the north of Stroud. The remaining mound is about 55 metres in length, up to half as wide, and still 4 metres in height. At the northeastern end are the remains of a horned entrance with forecourt and a single stone lined chamber. Remains of this chamber are supposedly still to be seen, but the barrow is heavily overgrown, making any stone remains invisible to me when I visited.
The barrow is set right on the hilltop, and almost surrounded by various quarrying and pits, some of which may date back almost as long as the barrow itself. Positioned within this thick Cotswold woodland, the place is very atmospheric, and supposedly a much more authentic setting than those barrows in open fields.
A bit further on in the woods to the northeast are a couple of other round barrows, and a crossdyke.
From Stroud, take the road north towards Randwick, and follow it up the hill, taking the little lane to the left when almost at the hilltop. There is a small parking area here, and a well maintained trackway north into the woods, from where the barrow is only a few hundred metres distant.

Log Text: A few hundred metres west along the hilltop ridge from the Kings Weston Hillfort can be seen the remains of a large circular earthwork, of unsure date. People have been living and working on this hilltop ridge since neolithic times, and it is thought that this earthwork is some sort of stockpound dating from perhaps bronze or iron age times. It is a very pleasant spot up on this hilltop, surrounded by the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, but you would hardly know it, and can easily get taken back in time while up here.

Some of these clumps hide the remains of several bronze age burial mounds.

Some of these clumps hide the remains of several bronze age burial mounds. The burial mounds are not in the best of condition, but are thought to date back to almost 2000BC. It is a very pleasant spot up on this hilltop, surrounded by the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, but you would hardly know it, and can easily get taken back in time while up here.

Log Text: At the northeastern end of the ridge that is Kings Weston Hill, now in the northwestern suburbs of Bristol, is to be found the remains of an iron age hillfort and farmstead. It is situated in parkland, just to the southwest of the more impressive Blaise Castle. The hill and immediately surrounding area is nowadays parkland, a part of the Blaise Castle estate. The steeply sloping sides of the hill are thick woodland, while the flat top of the ridge is open grassland, and makes for a nice walk. There is an informative noticeboard. The defended enclosure at the end of the ridge has been dated to 800BC and was in use until Roman times. The steep northern edge of the ridge still has some remains of earthern ramparts, while on the flat top of the hill is a rectangular banked enclosure.

New Years Day 2016 has been a foul miserable dark and wet day, so in a small effort to get myself out of the house, thought I'd go and get a couple of pictures of this fairly new stone circle. I dont know when this was constructed, I only noticed it for the first time sometime last year; it seems fairly new and I assume the stones are from the local quarry.

Oldbury Standing Stone submitted by TheCaptain on 8th May 2016. On a warm sunny afternoon, I went for a good look for this, but found nothing to match the description. In fact, at some time in the past (since 1953) a whole load of drainage and seawall flood protection work has been done, which now contains the Oldbury Naite Rhine within substantial banks, with any of its little tributaries in the area now in underground culverts emptying through flap doors into the Rhine. The height of the banking is now well above what it would have been.

Log Text: Went for a look for this stone on a hot sunny June afternoon as part of a walk around Oldbury. Despite being 99% sure where it was to be found, I initially didn't find it as it was totally overgrown, and not under the new footpath gate, but an old wooden bit of fence to the side. With a bit of trampling on the long grass, I got to see the whole stone. Great to see it, it would be a splendid standing stone.
