Halicarnassus Mausoleum

Halicarnassus Mausoleum submitted by thecaptain on 28th Mar 2007. The modern day remains of Halicarnassus Mausoleum in Bodrum Turkey. Most of the stones originally used in the building of this "one of the seven wonders" are now built into the walls of Bodrum castle.

Log Text: The wind has got up overnight and is apparently too strong out at sea for us to go out for the day. This is only the third day that’s been cancelled all season. Still, it’s no problem, as we can go to Bodrum for the day and do the tourist thing. I never knew before that Bodrum was the ancient city of Halicarnassos, and home to one of the seven ancient wonders. What an amazing history the place has. The Dolmus takes about 20 minutes and costs about 30p each. Brilliant.
First off, we head for the remains of the Halicarnassos Mausoleum, the ancient wonder of the world. It was built by Queen Artemesia for her brother and husband, King Mausolus in 355BC.
What an amazing place it must have been, about 7 storeys high. But when the Knights of St John got there in 1494, they decided it was nothing more than a fantastic pile of stone with which to build their castle. So now there’s almost nothing left.
There is remains of an amazing drainage system and robber tunnels where ancient people tried to get in for treasure, and a few bits of massive column, but not much else.

Log Text: My notes from my sailing log book of my visit.

The wind has got up overnight again, and is W 6-7 out in the main sea area, with 2m swell. We are going nowhere today. Catch the Dolmus to Bodrum to do the tourist thing, spend the morning visiting the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, and afternoon in the Bodrum Castle and shipwrecks museum. A good day to be stuck in harbour. The Dolmus takes about 20 minutes and costs about 30p each. Brilliant.

After lunch, its to the castle, which includes the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This is all absolutely brilliant, with shipwrecks and their finds found round the local coast dating back to the bronze age. In various castle rooms are different shipwrecks, arranged as they were found, and as the ships would have been. I particularly liked the 12th Century BC wreck with its ingots of copper, and there is some amazing glass ware from the 11th century “Glass ship”. And masses and masses of amphorae from throughout the millenia.

Aguas Tuertas Dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 24th Dec 2017. From hikepyrenees. In an area called Aguas Tuertas (twisted waters) between the valleys of Hecho and Canfranc is a large flat col that a stream meanders through giving the area it’s name. A dolmen stands at the col in a fabulous location and although it’s only small most people say it’s the prettiest in the region. It’s dated back to 3000 BC and legends say the dolmen is home to the spirits of the region that control access across the pass.
