West Kennet Avenue polisher submitted by TheCaptain on 30th Sep 2019. Down near the bottom of the stone, facing the fence and road, can be seen one fairly large polishing dish and some smaller grooves, perhaps arrow sharpening grooves.
The polishing surfaces are unfortunately in the shadows of this lovely sunny evening.

Log Text: One of the West Kennet Avenue stones on the eastern side near to the road about mid way along the remaining avenue, has evidence of being used as a polisher stone. Down near the bottom of the stone, facing the fence and road, can be seen one fairly large polishing dish and some smaller grooves, perhaps arrow sharpening grooves. As the polishing bowl would have probably been used flat so that water could be kept in the bowl to aid the polishing process, this would suggest that the stone was raised at a later date to become part of the Avenue.

Log Text: Remains of a big longbarrow just to the north of Beckhampton roundabout, roughly in line with the Avebury western Avenue. I wonder how much this has been altered over the years, as the land around it is slightly raised making a much longer shape, perhaps double the remaining length. It also looks like the northeastern end has a horned courtyard entrance feature, but this is well within the yaised ground, and also looks too good to be original, as it is not slumped down enough to my eyes. Looking at historical records, and it is stated that "the mound has been severely mutilated and its terminals ploughed", and had been "much damaged by the digging chalk out of it and perhaps stones"

Log Text: Legs working well after the first chiro session. Back to Avebury and walked around the henge and stones before a pint in the Red Lion. Still fairly early and legs feeling good, so walked down the route of the Beckhampton Avenue to Adam and Eve and a huge longbarrow before going back To Avebury and the car.

Log Text: Did pretty much the whole Avebury tour with Dad and Rachael. Drove up the avenue from the Sanctury, and parked in the NH car park. Walked around the whole henge, and visited the internal circles. I'd forgotten quite how massive and wonderful Avebury is, even with a lot of people here

Log Text: Decided to go find The Polisher on a wonderful sunny day to see if my legs were working again. Parked at Avebury, then walked up the Herepath to The Ridgeway, and turned north. Found the polisher too easily, and had lunch sat on it. Legs working well after the first chiro session, so continued north up the Ridgeway before turning to drop down off the hills and back to Avebury via some tumuli, but had to go a longer way due to a field of inquisitive bullocks. Back to Avebury and walked around the henge and stones before a pint in the Red Lion. Still fairly early and legs feeling good, so walked down the route of the Beckhampton Avenue to Adam and Eve and a huge longbarrow before going back To Avebury and the car. Drove via Silbury to the Kennet Avenue, and walked up and down that, finding the second polisher stone. Beautiful day ouy.

Log Text: Having failed to get dinner at The Barge Inn, we got sandwiches in Marlborough, and then went and sat up on top of WKLB to eat them in the lovely sunshine, overlooking Silbury Hill and Avebury. Its lovely up here. But, there are always nutters about, banging drums, dowsing, tealights etc. What a shame the place has to put up with this.

Log Text: The electric at home is off for the day so they can cut some trees, so I have a trip to Avebury for a long walk up to the polisher, down the Ridgeway and back to Avebury via Overton Down, East Kennet, West Kennet longbarrow, Silbury Hill, Waden Hill and the Avenue. Well deserved pint at the Red Lion. Beautiful day out.

Log Text: Walking up Green Street to the ridgeway, there are good view of the plentiful barrows dotted about on the hillsides. I am passed several times by a chap who is walking quicker than me, but stops for lots of photos.
