Log Text: Re: the central ring cairn, I've been looking through Burl's Stone Circles and have as yet failed to find an explanation for what seems to be a large stone (or two) apparently missing and the resultant space filled in with rocks.

Isn't it odd that had a passage started where such stones might be missing, then it would logically(?) have continued in the same direction, i.e. towards the midwinter sunset, as do the passages in the other two cairns, i.e. passage cairns, on the site.

Ballochroy

Ballochroy submitted by howe on 9th Jun 2009. The three stone row viewed in a traditionally reported solistial alignment with the paps of Jura. In fact, antiquarial descriptions of the site show that the row was linearly aligned with three cairns and a further standing stone directed toward a hill on the mainland. Onlt one cist of the cairns is now visible.

Balliscate submitted by Nick on 2nd Nov 2003. Isle of Mull NM499541 Park at the Mull Pottery and take the track just north of the buildings which leads west up-hill. The stones are around 400m in, on a raised platform. There are 3 stones here, the centre one being recumbent. The northern stone is the larger, being just over 2.5m in height. The row runs roughly N-S, and the southern stone is well under 2m. The central recumbent stone looks as if it would have been the largest, it's around 3m long in its current position. This is a p...

Balfarg Henge

Balfarg Henge submitted by cosmic on 4th Dec 2003. Balfarg is a henge which was excavated when a housing estate was built round it in the 1970's. There are only two standing stones but post holes found inside the henge have been marked with a set of wooden posts. Surprisingly only one part of the henge ditch seems to have been subject to vandalism (by bikes?)

Balbirnie submitted by Nick on 5th Nov 2002. From the A92 running north from Glenrothes, turn east onto the un-numbered road for Star and Kennoway. 100m along this road is a sign for the Balbirnie housing development, turn in here and about 150m/200m along, where the road curves right, you will see the circle just below you. Park up in the housing development itself and walk back. The site itself dates from c3000 B.C., and used to be located 125m to the north west of where it stands at present. It was always known locally as the "Druid...
