Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west. Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...

Log Text: Any suggestions / thoughts on the track / path seen here leading south from the sharp turning in the farm road a very short distance south of the circle: http://goo.gl/maps/HKskO ? I didn't notice the track on my visit, but wonder now if it is the original approach route to the circle, rather than a modern but (almost) disused farmer's horse / quad bike route.

Tair Carn Uchaf submitted by sem on 23rd Mar 2015. Cairn C This shot is taken from Tair Carn Isaf Cairn A, and Cairn C nestles beautifully in the notch. Cairn A seems to be relatively insignificant until you notice this 'sightline'. Move 5 yards in any direction and this effect vanishes. This cannot be pure chance!

The lower chamber, reached by a 19' passage, is about 12' long x 5' wide x 5' high, and is divided into 4 cells by upright slabs. The upper chamber, whose floor is the celing of the lower chamber, is reached by an 11' long passage, and is divided into 2 compartments. The cairn is built on a hill so each passage is at ground level, one on the uphill side, the other on the dow...

A panoramic view of the Cockpit Stone Circle which according to Magicmap ‘includes a circular kerbed stone bank 2.8m -11.2m wide and up to 0.5m high which encloses an area approximately 27m in diameter. There are 27 (?) standing and recumbent stones set largely into the internal face of this bank, thereby creating the stone circle. The tallest standing stone measures about 0.95m high and some of the recumbent stones are up to 1.9m in length. Within the eastern side of the stone circle, abuttin...

Log Text: Zoom in using Bing’s aerial view and you will see, close to the big stone, a big enough boggy hole in the ground to the North, and one at 1 o’clock, and another at 2 o’clock. I’ll dare to suggest that they might indicate where the missing three stones once stood.

Interesting too is the track immediately on the west side of the Great Stone. To the south it becomes one track which seems to continue on across Aikengill Road, then swing west to join that same road c. 200m away, and to swing east then south to continue generally towards the farm known as Sea View on Ringstones Lane (and there’s a name to ponder on!). North of the Great Stone the “dual carriageway” of tracks spreads like fingers through the boggy ground, but the walker here will find that generally the path curves towards Fourstones Barn and continues north-ish from there. It seems quite possible that the track(s) described in this paragraph were the forerunners of the modern Slaidburn Road.
