Maen Llia
Date Added: 25th Oct 2015
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 1967. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Maen Llia submitted by cerrig on 23rd Jun 2015. A real life manifestation of the stone 'going down to the stream for a drink' - or its shadow at least! Not quite the solstice , a couple of days late . Kite aerial photo of the sunset shadow , and Maen Llia's new enclosure . No expense was wasted on the planning or erecting , a very frugal venture .

Log Text: Having waited "only" eight years to visit (after glimpsing it from the E20 in 2008), I am pleased to say it's well worth a visit. Much quarried around, there is still a lot remaining and thoroughly perplexing it looks too.

Log Text: It's a whopper. Higher, I guess, than the front end of West Kennet Long Barrow. At a glance from the road it might be mistaken for a modern pile of earth from road building, or similar construction. The aerial view in Bing's mapping shows a crop mark of sorts with squared off corners at NNE, ESE, SSW and WNW, BUT there is horse racing training going on nearby, although one wouldn't expect squared corners on such a circle?

Long Stone (Minchinhampton)
Date Added: 20th Apr 2016
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Would like to visit
Long Stone (Minchinhampton) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2009. Sunset 26/12/09 - an unplanned visit to a number of sites in the area.
No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin.
Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon.
A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...
