Aden Mounds

Aden Mounds submitted by AKFisher on 10th Aug 2023. Aden Mounds, Mississippi. There are 3 mounds at this site arranged around a large, rectangular plaza area. Two are rectangular platform mounds 10-ft high. One was built around AD 200 and the others in AD 850. Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, author of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Native American Indian Mounds & Earthworks (2016).

Log Text: There is a parking pulloff next to the farm field where the mounds are located. The closest mound is about 100 ft from the historical marker. Both mounds degraded but clearly visible.

Alcorn Cemetery Mound

Alcorn Cemetery Mound submitted by stonetracker on 11th Mar 2024. Alcorn Cemetery mound behind fenced enclosure. It appears to be a rectangular platform mound although the extent to which it has been modified and reshaped is not known.

Log Text: Can park off road in a grassy pulloff area, at least in the winter. Cemetery is about a 100 yd walk.

Alignement de Kerloquet

Date Added: 10th Oct 2024

Alignement de Kerloquet

Log Text: Just west of the low wetland (formerly a reservoir), the Kermario alignments end on a bluff. They then seem to resume on the hill just east of the wetland as a much smaller separate site called the Kerloquet (or Manio) alignments. It's possible these alignments were unbroken and continuous in antiquity.

Parking is the same as that for the Manio Quadrilatere, right off D196. See that log for details. A trail heads up the hill and parallels the northern rows of the alignments.

Alignement dit Mer-er-Morh

Date Added: 9th Dec 2024
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3

Alignement dit Mer-er-Morh

Alignement dit Mer-er-Morh submitted by maengurta on 5th Apr 2008. Directly opposite the riding stables 1/2 mile west of Erdeven can be found this partially ruined alignment. I counted 7 stones with 2 still standing.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This one turned out to be a "drive by" as there was no obvious (to me) off road public parking nearby and on-street parking was not a safe proposition. So no photos. All I can say is the stones are still there and the site looks cleared of overgrowth and maintained.

Alignements de Toulchignan

Date Added: 6th Oct 2024

Log Text: This is a small extension of the easternmost Menec alignments, ending in a mostly ruined cromlech. Like Menec, they are fenced off in the summer months.

Although it's a lengthy hike from the Maison des Megalithes, I chose the shorter option of parking in a lot located just off of the D196, about 300 m east of its junction with the Carnac to Auray Road (D119). The alignments and cromlech are a short walk along the D119 fence line from there.

Alligator Mounds (Clarksdale)

Date Added: 9th Apr 2024
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 1st Apr 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3

Alligator Mounds (Clarksdale)

Alligator Mounds (Clarksdale) submitted by stonetracker on 8th Apr 2024. Mound B, this is the closest mound to the road. All mounds are on a private farm and closer access is only possible with permission.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Although there is no official parking pulloff, the road has enough shoulder to pull partially off it opposite Mound B. Mound B and C are clearly visible in a field behind a wire fence. Mound A is mostly blocked from view. Mounds D and E are in the middle of cultivated land and I was unable to definitely ID them.

Anguilla Mound

Date Added: 2nd Nov 2023
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Anguilla Mound

Anguilla Mound submitted by AKFisher on 1st Aug 2023. Anguilla Mound, Mississippi. It was the focal point of a large village constructed around AD 1000. It is now 20 feet high but soil on the top was removed years ago. Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, author of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Native American Indian Mounds & Earthworks (2016).

Log Text: Visited in Oct 2023. Site on private property in a residential neighborhood about 100 yds from the road and sign. Easily viewed from the street.

Arcola Mounds

Date Added: 4th Feb 2023
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 1st Oct 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Arcola Mounds

Arcola Mounds submitted by stonetracker on 4th Feb 2023. Mound C in center of image, with a borrow pit nearby. Mound B on left and Mound A on right partially blocked from view.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: All mounds are on private property. There is a pull-off on Old Rte 61 next to a private field rd (no legal access on any of the field roads) that allows a limited view of Mound C (in a grove of trees) and a very small part of Mound B to its south. But the largest Mound A is blocked from this vantage point. It is possible to get a better view of Mound B farther down the road by walking, but no safe place to park.

Aztalan State Park

Date Added: 9th Aug 2024
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2024. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Aztalan State Park

Aztalan State Park submitted by bat400 on 31st Mar 2013. The largest mound at Aztalan is a "stepped" pyramidal structure in the southwest corner of the stockade surround. This is a partial reconstruction of the site as found in the early 1800's. By the 1920's there had been substantial plowing of the site and significant damage by "pot hunters" and those simply "quarrying" the mounds for fill dirt and the remains of burnt wattle and daub from the original stockade. Photo by bat400, July 2010.

Log Text: A very well-maintained hybrid Late Woodland-Mississippian prehistoric site in Aztalan State Park, Aztalan WI. There are two parking lots. One at the south end of the "marker mounds" at the state park entrance provides short and easy trail access to the northwest platform mound. The other larger lot is accessible via a paved road past the main park entrance and is located close to the southwest "temple" mound via a short trail.

The Princess Mound (which I did not visit) is located behind the museum north of the main park entrance.

Aztec Ruins National Monument

Date Added: 10th May 2025

Visited: Yes on 1st Apr 2025. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 4

Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec Ruins National Monument submitted by Creative Commons on 22nd Dec 2018. Aztec Ruins National Monument is located in Northern New Mexico. It was home to the Ancestral Puebloans, who built and lived in the great houses here beginning in the mid 11th century until the late 13th century. The West Ruin, also called the Aztec West Great House, was three stories tall and contained over 500 rooms. Image copyright: Jaspe...
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: An outstanding example of a partially excavated Chaco Canyon outlier great house site. The West Ruin is mostly excavated with a great kiva completely restored to the way it likely looked originally. The East Ruin is not excavated and is currently off limits to site visitors other than professional researchers. It can be glimpsed (not easily) from the West Ruin.

The National Monument also includes a visitor center and excellent interpretive exhibits on ancestral pueblo history and development in the Four Corners region.

The site is conveniently located a mile north of State Route 550 at the end of Ruins Rd. The parking lot accommodates at least 20 vehicles. Most of the ruins can be self-toured via short foot paths, guided tours not required. Some of the rooms are open to visitation as well as the restored great kiva. Only the tri-walled Hubbard structure is separate from the main complex, about a 200 yd walk north.

Batesville Mounds

Batesville Mounds

Log Text: Visited twice in April 2024. This site is in a well maintained park, funded by both the town and state. Excellent interpretation and a paved walkway that allows disabled access to Mounds A-C. Mound D and the habitation areas require a further walk on an unpaved woods trail. Plenty of parking.

Bayou Pierre Mounds

Date Added: 17th Nov 2023
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 3

Bayou Pierre Mounds

Bayou Pierre Mounds submitted by AKFisher on 10th Aug 2023. Sole surviving mound at the Bayou Pierre site in Mississippi. It is a 16-ft high platform mound constructed in AD 1000. It was focused on a large plaza area surrounded by an expansive village covering over a square mile. It was used until AD 1350. Photo courtesy Dr Greg Little, author of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Native American Indian Mounds & Earthworks (2016).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: When the leaves are off the trees, Mound A is visible about 100 yds NE of the site parking pulloff on Old Mill Rd. In other seasons, it is walking accessible via an abandoned road about 100-200 yds S of the pulloff.

I was unable to locate Mound B as described, so it has likely eroded past the point of surface recognition. Mound D is located about 1/2 mile away, but I did not have a definitive location and did not try to find it.

Log Text: A very small Mississippian mound and village site on the Natchez Trace, right over the MS/AL line in MS.

There is a large parking area with some limited interpretation. There is only a single rectangular platform mound about 200 ft from the lot. For mobility-impaired visitors, the mound and village area can be easily seen from the parking area.

Beaverdam Mounds

Date Added: 10th Mar 2024
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3

Beaverdam Mounds

Beaverdam Mounds submitted by stonetracker on 10th Mar 2024. Contour map of site. Note the absence of slope contours for Mound B just SW of A. It may have been plowed to surface level and no longer visible.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This site is within a mile of the Evansville Mound site. There is a parking pulloff about 500 ft south of Mound A, which lies in a cultivated private field bordering Beaverdam Lake. Visibility is unobstructed, but I was unable to spot the much-reduced Mound B to the south of it.

The usual interpretive signage was not present. It was either removed or stolen.

Log Text: Saw at least one set of the markings from the bridge with binoculars. The yellow paint makes them easy to spot from high up. Took one look at the access from the outcrops and decided it was a bit too steep and rugged for my taste.

Benham Mound

Date Added: 31st Oct 2023
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Couldn't find

Benham Mound

Benham Mound submitted by stonetracker on 22nd Feb 2023. The mound itself is in the woods on the hill and not shown in photo, courtesy of Wikipedia Creative Commons from 2012. Comment from original poster: "Looking southeast from Section Road at the Kincaid Road intersection in Amberley, Ohio, United States. In the woods at the top of the hill is the Benham Mound"
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Visited in late Oct 2023. Was unable to locate, but had only approximate coordinates. It is somewhere on the hilltop at the end of Grand Vista Ave which is private property.

There is a mowed field in a town park at the jct of Kincaid and Section Rds. There is a trail at the rear of the field leading up the hill. However, I didn't see anything obvious near the top and would have had to battle heavy overgrowth to explore further. This may have to be visited in a season when there is less obscuring vegetation.
