Log Text: The mound is almost impossible to photograph or video as it is very low profile and eroded. There are warning signs to stay off as they are trying to establish prairie grass growth on the mound and mow around it. Once it grows out a bit, the mound will become more obvious.
You can park nearly at the mound itself so access is not an issue.

Log Text: Wisconsin's largest state park is very popular, particularly in summer. There were plenty of visitors when I was there. Interesting geology, which I really didn't have time to explore.
As for the effigy mounds, most are well preserved with one or two exceptions and all were built during the Late Woodland period. There are four groups of them remaining, three on the North side of the lake and one single large bird effigy mound on the South end. All easy walk-in access and close to parking. Log Text: There are 4-5 relatively accessible effigy mound groups according to the Wisconsin Mounds site. I was able to view several of them. As with most effigy mound sites, viewing conditions range from mowed and in good condition to either completely overgrown or eroded to the point of near invisibility. Even the best effigy mounds are difficult to photograph. I've provided some still shots or videos. Aerial LiDAR views frankly show these mounds better than any on the ground method so I hope to add those.
I was unable to access the Indoor Group Camp and Homestead Camp mound groups. They appear to require bushwhacks and both access points into the forest were occupied by campers.

A group of college students outlined the effigy mounds with agricultural lime before the National Park Service took this photo. These are thought to have been made around AD 500.

Log Text: I visited in the heat of summer and opted not to attempt the steep climb to the mounds in the north or south unit of the park, but instead visited the park museum and tried some easier alternatives nearby.
There is a not very well known unit of the park called Sny Magill that contains over 100 effigy mounds and is located well south of the south unit. It is at the end of a gravel access road, accessed via a short trail from a boat ramp on the Mississippi. This site has the advantage of no climbing because it is located nearly at the level of the river. Unfortunately, the access road is prone to flooding and was closed that day. Will return at another time.

Log Text: Public parking is available in a lot next to the Waukesha Public Library near the corner of Maple and West Park Ave. The 3 mounds are maybe a 200 yd easy walk north over a manicured lawn area and obvious.
The site is as described, with a 7-8 foot high conical mound flanked by two smaller ones. Orange cones and "Keep Off" signs are in place to discourage people from walking on the mounds. Not aesthetic but needed in my opinion. The mounds are also covered with higher vegetation than the surrounding mowed lawn to prevent further erosion.

Log Text: Visited the Central or Inner section only. There's a lot to see here in this section alone if you include all of the mounds, habitation areas, other non-mound sites. It took me 3 hrs just to cover all of the Central area not including the museum. Most features with some exceptions are accessible via paved walkways so disabled access is good. Quite a bit of walking involved to see it all, and limited parking sites. The museum lot is the best base to start from for the Central area.
I will cover the western and eastern areas in a subsequent visit.

Log Text: The mound site is very compact and easily accessible along a National Park Service road or via a foot trail. Park at either the Shiloh Indian Mounds Visitor Kiosk or in a paved pullout area next to Mound F. The latter is the closest to the mound and plaza complex itself and most of the mounds are within a several hundred yard radius.

Log Text: Although there is no official parking pulloff, the road has enough shoulder to pull partially off it opposite Mound B. Mound B and C are clearly visible in a field behind a wire fence. Mound A is mostly blocked from view. Mounds D and E are in the middle of cultivated land and I was unable to definitely ID them.

Ingomar Mound in Mississippi. It was a massive mound complex surrounded by an earthwork & palisade. This platform mound is all that remains today.

Log Text: Most of this Middle Woodland site, once comprising 13 mounds and a palisade, was destroyed by cultivation. Was only able to find Mound 1 (a small burial mound only visible as a slight rise) and Mound 14 (a large rectangular platform mound in good condition).
All publicly accessible with parking and some interpretation. Mound 14 is about 1000 ft away on a mown footpath. Mound 1 is off to the left on the way to 14.

Log Text: Visited twice in April 2024. This site is in a well maintained park, funded by both the town and state. Excellent interpretation and a paved walkway that allows disabled access to Mounds A-C. Mound D and the habitation areas require a further walk on an unpaved woods trail. Plenty of parking.

Log Text: Site is maintained by the Cape Cod National Seashore unit of the NPS and accessible by foot trail from either Hemenway Rd or the Fort Hill area. The trail from Hemenway is paved and therefore disabled access is possible. Rock and markings in very good condition.

Log Text: One of the most impressive Early Mississippian sites anywhere in the US, let alone MS. Outside of the Lake George (Holly Bluff) site, it is likely the largest Native American mound site in the state, covering over a mile of terrain that once hosted over 80 mounds, an earthen enclosure, and a large village site. 5 of the largest mounds are the only cultural features that remain visible today. Unfortunately most of them are on private property and can only be viewed legally from the road unless owner permission is obtained (or they are approached with caution and respect). Some are posted No Trespassing.
Only Mound B has an official parking pulloff. The rest can be accessed, but generally require parking in a private area with some short distance walking.
