Log Text: I didn't actually visit the Oak Tree House site itself but viewed it remotely from the Oak Tree House View across the canyon. All of my images were captured from that overlook, which is a short walk from a paved parking pull-off on the Mesa Top Sites driving loop.

Mesa Verde - Fire Temple

Mesa Verde - Fire Temple

Mesa Verde - Fire Temple submitted by jeffrep on 14th Nov 2012. Fire Temple from the overlook across the canyon.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is actually two sites. The Fire Temple is what is believed to be a purely ceremonial structure. The New Fire House is adjacent and thought to be a cliff dwelling site for the caretakers of the temple. Both are late Pueblo 3 structures and not open to public visitation. However, they can be viewed remotely from the Fire Temple and New Fire House Overlook on the Mesa Top Loop drive.

Mesa Verde - Cliff Palace submitted by bat400 on 7th Aug 2012. A detail of Cliff Palace showing the square tower and two kivas. The kiva to the left (having an oval or "square" shape instead of a round shape) is "Kiva F"which is being shored up in 2012 to prevent its further cracking and damage. Photo by bat400, spring 2012.

Log Text: Much has already been written about this, the largest, most magnificent of the Pueblo 3 cliff dwelling sites at Mesa Verde, so I won't rehash it here. Only to say that I opted to view the site from two overlooks due to bad weather and time constraints. In 2025, ranger-led tours commenced the first week in May, in fact the day before I had to return home. Next time...

You can get a great remote view of the site from an overlook at the Sun Temple and an even closer look at an overlook on the Cliff Palace driving loop via a short trail.

Log Text: One of the better outdoor exhibits at Mesa Verde describing how Ancestral Pueblo architectural styles evolved between 900 and 1075 CE on mesa top sites. This is a stop on the Mesa Top loop drive with a parking pull-off and handicapped-accessible paved walkway to the excavated sites with interpretation.

Log Text: This and one of the Cliff Palace overlooks are the last stops on the Mesa Top Loop drive. This structure is unique within Mesa Verde as far as I know and there are many theories as to its purpose. Unfortunately there is no access to the interior of the complex, so you have to stand on a ledge outside the wall to get any view at all of the inside. However, there is a standalone circular structure outside the main building that you can approach at close range. The mortar capping on the tops of the walls was done by the NPS, presumably as part of the preservation effort, and is not prehistoric.

There is a very large parking pulloff and the temple is no more than a 100 yd walk from there.

Mesa Verde - Pithouses and Pueblos

Log Text: This is a stop on the Mesa Top loop drive that comprises two excavation sites. It explores the deevelopment of late Basketmaker pithouses into jacal dwellings and eventually into masonry room blocks with proto-kivas.

Access is via a parking pull-off and handicapped-accessible paved walkway.

Marsden Mounds

Marsden Mounds submitted by bat400 on 3rd Sep 2012. Mounds B, C, and D lie along the edge of this wood and the mowed grass plaza. They are quite low (only a few feet high) but still distinct. Photo by bat400, Oct 2011.

Log Text: Mounds A-D mostly plowed or eroded down to nothing. I'm told E is still extant in woods but very tough to get to through the overgrowth. I gave up trying :-).

Log Text: As noted in the description, there is no public access. Just a car pull-off next to a state historic marker. The mound is quite a distance south in a farm field but can be spotted with the naked eye.

Log Text: The one remaining mound is on private property. There is a Victorian mansion on top. Closest view from a vehicle is a pull-off on Rolling Fork Rd, about 800 ft from the site. Good visibility.

Arcola Mounds

Arcola Mounds submitted by stonetracker on 4th Feb 2023. Mound C in center of image, with a borrow pit nearby. Mound B on left and Mound A on right partially blocked from view.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: All mounds are on private property. There is a pull-off on Old Rte 61 next to a private field rd (no legal access on any of the field roads) that allows a limited view of Mound C (in a grove of trees) and a very small part of Mound B to its south. But the largest Mound A is blocked from this vantage point. It is possible to get a better view of Mound B farther down the road by walking, but no safe place to park.

Kings Crossing Mounds

Date Added: 4th Feb 2023
Site Type: Artificial Mound Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 1st Oct 2022. My rating: Ambience 2

Kings Crossing Mounds

Kings Crossing Mounds submitted by stonetracker on 4th Feb 2023. Artist's conception of the site. Mound A is on the right.

Log Text: Attempted to visit this site, but Mound A is apparently on private property behind some houses. Protective neighborhood dogs dissuaded me from making more of an effort. Mound C may be more accessible behind an abandoned church but I didn't have time to try. The area is very overgrown and winter may be a better time to go there.

Log Text: A very tall, steep Middle Woodland mound located in Florence AL near the north banks of the Tennessee River. Originally there was an 8 foot semi-circular embankment around the mound, but it was destroyed in the 19th or 20th century. The mound is now in a heavily developed industrial area within a fenced area. An adjacent city-owned museum provides a wealth of information on the site.

The mound is located a short distance east of Route 72 on a side street right after you cross over the Tennessee River from south to north. A paved driveway leads to a small parking area right after the museum.
