Foxborough Perched Boulder (5)

Foxborough Perched Boulder (5) submitted by stonetracker on 31st Jan 2023. An odd combination of perched boulder and standing stone no more than 10 ft from the propped boulder. The standing stone in particular looks put there by human hands, but who's to say.

Log Text: If this is the same structure as that on the published map, this was a short bushwhack north off the Megley Trail for me and not a 1/4 mile as described. Needs to be verified. Easiest to walk in via Megley from Thurston St lot.

Foxborough Perched Boulder (5)

Foxborough Perched Boulder (5) submitted by stonetracker on 23rd Jan 2023. Round 3' x 4' boulder with a single prop stone. Appears to be deliberately placed and not natural.

Log Text: Another visit. No changes, but added a photo or two. I confirmed that this is a short 100 ft bushwhack north from the Megley Trail, which you can see from the site during winter.

An interesting ancillary site very close to the propped boulder, not on published map. See photo.

Foxborough Prayer Seat (11)

Foxborough Prayer Seat (11) submitted by stonetracker on 30th Jan 2023. Site Z on published map.

Log Text: Site Z on the published map. Best way to get to this site is to park at the High Rock Road summit and hike down High Rock Rd. Take a left onto Messenger Rd and walk about 100-200 yds north past the waterhole to a height-of-land. The site is about a 100 ft bushwhack left (west) into the woods. Despite what the published map says, it is not easy to see from Messenger Rd due to brush, so a GPS device is helpful.

Log Text: Saw at least one set of the markings from the bridge with binoculars. The yellow paint makes them easy to spot from high up. Took one look at the access from the outcrops and decided it was a bit too steep and rugged for my taste.

Piketon Mounds

Piketon Mounds submitted by aluta on 29th Aug 2010. A view of the large mound, surmounted by a modern standing stone, otherwise known as a grave marker. No doubt it was thought to be an honour among later European-descended arrivals to be buried on the highest of the Indian mounds.

Log Text: Was able to locate what I believe are the 4 main mounds in the cemetery proper. The graded way is long gone as far as I can tell. See photos.

Hopewell Culture National Historic Site

Hopewell Culture National Historic Site submitted by bat400 on 27th May 2006. Hopewell Culture NHP, Mound City Group. Inside the main enclosure, this is a view looking toward the west. The large mound farthest back is the "Central Mound," the largest of the group. Closer is an elliptical mound, and a smaller conical mound is closest. * The "Central Mound" was erected over the remains of two timber buildings with 13 cremated burials. Artifacts found included falcon effigies cut from copper sheets and fragments of human skull that had been cut and drilled (perhaps ...

Log Text: Site is as described in the overview and comments. A mostly faithful reconstructed site, due to damage from previous excavations and military or agricultural use of property. Many Hopewell mound and earthworks sites have suffered from similar modern activities. Some have been at least partially rebuilt.

Hopewell Mound Group

Hopewell Mound Group submitted by stonetracker on 5th Feb 2023. Interpretation for the largest known Hopewell burial mound ever built (Mound 25). It actually started as three mounds which were soon conjoined into one as burials and fill were added. A floor plan from a 1920s excavation at the base of the mound shows fire pits, basins, post holes, and graves.

Log Text: Intent of this trip was to see what was left of the square earthwork (nothing) and the mounds within the much larger enclosure (only a few slight rises above the field now). This site was not reconstructed, so what you see is the result of ~ 2000 yrs of erosion, plowing, etc.

Log Text: Other accounts have described access to this mound as "private" and "no trespassing." But I encountered no such issues on a recent visit. Parked in a nearby lot for town offices, walked in back and the mound was maybe 100 ft to the left in a field not far from a baseball diamond. The mound property was not posted, but the possible enclosure referred to in the description is posted as private.
