Maiden Castle Barrow Cemetery submitted by JimChampion on 26th Jul 2005. Looking north at the most prominent barrow of the cemetery, from the edge of the Maiden Castle visitors' car park. The barrow can also be seen from the nearby Dorchester by-pass, a few weeks earlier I was passing by and the barrow seemed to be stood amid a sea of blue cornflower.

Forty four barrows located in this area located between Winterbourne Abbas, Kingstone Russell and Little Bredy. Near the A35 (south side) there are 20 bowl barrows, e.g. a superb ditched bowl barrow 40.3m diam. 3.7m high next to a disc barrow. Further barrows located up the hillside, and in field on the N side of the road.

Dyrham Camp, otherwise known as Hinton Hillfort, is best seen from high land in Dyrham Park (National Trust) Dating from the Iron Age, it was the likely site of the Battle of Dyrham in 577 AD when the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that the invading Saxons under "Cuthwine and Ceawlin fought against the Britons and slew three kings, Coinmail, Condidan and Farimail at the place which is called Dyrham; and they captured three cities, Gloucester, Cirencester and Bath"

Turn off the A46 to Kingswood and take the third turning to the left to Upper Cheyney.Follow this road to a fork and take a left to Coldharbour Farm.Ask at the farm for permission to go into the field and mind the cows.Well worth a visit.

Camp Barrow submitted by SolarMegalith on 7th Aug 2008. Remains of a burial chamber with a fallen capstone lies near the northern barrow. If it was realy a long barrow like the OS map claims, big part of it is destroyed now.
