Furzehill Common stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 19th May 2010. Here I found four little stumps of stone in a row, in a boggy hollow on top of the ridge. They are spaced 2.5, 5, 2.5 metres apart, suggesting a missing stone in between those I could find.

Log Text: This row can be reached either by walking from Brendon Two Gates (SS 76507 43252) which takes you past the rows on Cheriton Ridge or from Shallowford (SS 71409 44955) which avoids a couple of steep climbs.

The stones are tiny and very difficult to find, with most of them probably buried under the turf and heather.

Log Text: This is not an easy row to reach. Car parking is available at SS 83523 42234. From here follow the footpath west past the Madacombe stone row and then head west to SS 80073 43241. The row is a short distance to the east. Having made the effort it is worth having look at the nearby rows at East Pinford and Trout Hill.

Log Text: Limited car parking is available at SS 71410 44956 at Shallowford. From here head east along the path to SS 71818 44908 at which point turn south and follow the track to SS 72602 43860. Leave the track and head south to the gate at SS 72754 43552. The row is a short distance upslope from here.

From here follow the footpath west past the Madacombe stone row and then head towards the footbridge at SS 80325 42848. After crossing the river follow the footpath to SS 79811 42666. Then head north west to the row. Having made the effort it is worth having look at the nearby rows at Tom’s Hill and Trout Hill.

Could I find anything ? No chance !!!! I found nothing at all, wading around in waist deep wet grass and heather. If there are any stones to be found here, they are well hidden under the wet moorland growth. I did however, get soaking wet and a twisted ankle for my efforts !

It was seen by Exmoor National Park staff in 2018 and I have seen the photographs. I am going to try again when I am next on Exmoor.

Log Text: Car parking is available at SS 72444 40419. From here take the footpath north to SS 72311 42209. Turn left and follow the path to Woodbarrow Gate at SS 71648 42509. Enter Woodbarrow Hangings and follow the northern side of the wall past some very fine cairns to a gateway SS 70833 42583. From here head south west. Perhaps you will have more luck than I did. The stones were seen in 2018 and I have seen photographs of them. I am going to try and have another look when I am next on Exmoor.

Quartz stones are everywhere, scattered around loose on the ground. Thanks to the book Ancient Exmoor I was able to follow these quartz rocks on through the hedge at the back of the photo, across the road and into the field the other side, and for several hundred yards distance after the road.

Log Text: Roadside car parking is available next to the row at SS 73238 37254. This site is best visited after a prolonged period of dry weather when the rushes have been cut. The gateway leading to the site has subsequently been blocked and access to the field may now be along the road to the south.

Here is the roof of Dartmoor, from the top you can see right all across Dartmoor. In the picture is a piece of granite probably Megalithic in age and is in a series of stones running along the top of this hill. This row is unique within Dartmoor as it the only one with equal spacing within the row and above 600m, 100m above any other row in Dartmoor. The peat has washed away from around the stone but not from underneath, meaning the granite sticks out above the ground.

Log Text: This is not an easy row to get to. It lies within the Okehampton Range and it is only possible to visit when live firing is not taking place. Details of firing times are available online. Access is difficult which ever direction it is approached from. After much thought, I decided that the south looked best. Car parking is available at Postbridge (SX 64667 78839). From here take the footpath leading north to SX 63444 79743. From here continue following the path to SX 62823 80230 and then along the western side of the East Dart River to SX 60837 82087. Follow the line of poles that separate the Okehampton and Merrivale Ranges to SX 59748 82645 then walk north to the row which is at the top of the hill. Allow a whole day and make sure you have map. My journey was eventful. At one point three sky larks attacked a cuckoo, another sky lark collided with me when being chased by a kestrel which then hovered for a few seconds within arms reach, in the middle of nowhere a group of people were partaking in what looked like a delicious cream tea and I was joined for part of the journey by a couple who made the final ascent pass without the expected pain.

Picture courtesy of Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks: "Barrow c20m overall diameter on the top of 'Cut Hill' at 603m OD was observed during a field visit by Tom Greeves in 2004. The 1.5m high circular mound has a military range pole set in it & surface erosion has exposed a turf/peat core with a few stones. The surrounding ditch is over 1m wide & nearly filled with waterlogged vegetation."
