Lanacombe 3
Date Added: 4th Feb 2020
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2019. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 2

Lanacombe 3 submitted by TheCaptain on 1st Aug 2007. My hat and bag are marking the positions of fallen stones I found under the turf.
It looked to me as if this setting was once perhaps two rows running up the hillside, perhaps a sixpack.

Log Text: Car parking is available at SS 76428 42356. From here follow the bridleway eastward to the row. Whilst in the area it is worth having a look at the other Lanacombe stone rows and Trout Hill 4.

Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 12th Apr 2019. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 3
Hoaroak 1 submitted by TheCaptain on 30th May 2010. Most of the stones are less than 18 inches long, and fallen, or else just stubs of stone still fast in the ground. Only one stone really stands proudly near the centre of the setting.

Log Text: Limited parking is available at SX 26006 76124. From here walk north along the bridleway to SX 25940 76282 where the left branch in the track should be followed. The lower slopes of the hill are covered in dense vegetation and it is easy to get lost in the myriad of small tracks, but experience showed that it is best to stick to the more clearly defined ones or alternatively visit in the winter or spring when the vegetation is likely to be less of a problem. It is certainly worth making the effort.

The northern length of the row has been exposed by peat erosion and a shift in orientation coincides with an adjacent rock outcrop which blocks views from parts of the row. The row is orientated NNW to SSE and there is another stone row in the vicinity.

Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 11th Apr 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4
Almsworthy submitted by thecaptain on 24th Nov 2006. Almsworthy Common is stated by various sources to be the remains of two concentric ovals, or up to six lines of stones, but I felt it was fairly random.
Its quite fun wandering round trying to figure out what patterns the stones are making. I can see six in this picture, with a few more hidden from view by the heather.
