Easter Aquhorthies

Easter Aquhorthies submitted by Umbra-man on 20th Mar 2020. 20 Mar 20. This years Spring EQ sunrise. Horizon slightly obscured by cloud, while the rest of the sky was.... 99% clear ! Sub zero by a few degrees made for chilly camera fingers, but even for the ancients this must have been a special place and time of the year. In the Neolithic calendar this is the start of spring. For folk that came later (Celts/Picts/Pagans) this is the season of Imbolc.

Log Text: A fascinating and delightful site with a complex and interesting history! The chambers have been subject to repairs using bricks and mortar to create additional pillars, but this does not prevent an appreciation of the site. Although it is situated adjacent to a school and houses, and is close to the main road, this did not detract from the ambience as much as you might expect. The main sound we heard was birdsong.

Dun Carloway submitted by swatson on 28th Aug 2004. This impressive Broch is near Carloway in the west of the Island of Lewis. Sadly time did not permit detailed exploration but that's something to look forward to at a later date. There is enough of this tower standing to indicate the method and the superb workmanship involved in it's construction. OS NB 192 413

Drumtroddan Cup and Ring Markings

Drumtroddan Cup and Ring Markings submitted by rockartuk on 20th Aug 2001. On a fenced outcrop, 200m South of the farm (NX 362 447), R.W.B. Morris counted 84 cup-and-rings (1979). This photo was taken in 1993 with the carvings still clear. However, in 2000 the marks turned very faint. Acid rain? The question of preservation (after about 5000 years!) is now actual as well as urgent. How?

Log Text: An impressive circle-henge, this site is almost a total restoration. A few stones survived the plough until the early 20th century, when they were buried to make room for an airfield. This is turn became a quarry and a landfill site so that the site exists at all is something for which we should be very grateful! It was restored in the early 21st century by re-erecting the remaining stones and replacing others, and restoring the bank and ditch. When I first visited in 2009 the site still seemed quite raw and exposed to the surrounding industry, but now overlooking a lake. Since then the surrounding trees have grown and matured and the old landfill areas have been better landscaped, making for a much improved ambience although there is still some activity around the landfill. However it is a fine place to visit now (May 2020) and as the landscape continues to mature it will only continue to improve.

Log Text: Access and information has improved since my last visit. A new road (Marina Lane) branches off Roecliffe Road on the way into Boroughbridge and this now features a small parking area with an information board about the stones which seems to be aimed at visitors to the Devils Arrows.

One of the Arrows sits adjacent to the main road in a small clearing while the two others stand in the field opposite it. All of them can be seen from the new parking spaces and can be walked to. Although the main road into Boroughbridge passes by one stone and the two others are close to the A168 road this does not detract as much as you think it would as the stones are big enough to have an imposing presence of their own. Access to one Arrow is extremely easy as it is next to the road, while access to the others would probably depend more on the state of the crops in the field.

This is an excellent site to visit as a break if you are on a car journey up or down the A1(M) and the new layby and information board is a positive development. In spite of this I am sure that many people drive straight past and don't realise that the stones are there
