Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton)

Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. Caer Caradoc, taken from a northwest angle on a lovely summer's morning. Indeed, this offers some formidable defense. If this were the place of Caratacus' last stand against the Romans, this would have indeed been something difficult to conquer, even by Roman standards. However, there is no evidence to confirm this suggestion.

The Stiperstones

The Stiperstones submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. A cairn just north east of Manstone Rock. "The Stiperstones" is the name for a hill on the far west reaches of Shropshire, well into The Welsh Marches, overlooking the Welsh border. It is the second highest hill in Shropshire, affording superb views in all directions, and having several bronze age cairns along its ridge. The cairns themselves, excepting the largest, can be quite hard to locate. At a very reductionist level, they are basically piles of stone amidst a whole ridge of piles of...

Gawton's Well

Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well. The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...

Iken Saxon Cross

Iken Saxon Cross submitted by PAB on 23rd Aug 2015. Information board, with sketches and artist's impression. In case it doesn't come out well, this is the text: "Saxon Cross" "Stanley West, then county archaeologist, made an exciting discovery in 1977. A large piece of stone built into the base of the church tower was a piece of an early stone cross. It is decorated with Anglo-Saxon interlace patterns and a mythical beast. Dating from the late 800s to early 900s, it would have been originally about 3 metres high. Such crosses ...

West Kennet Avenue

West Kennet Avenue submitted by pab on 31st Aug 2009. Wanton destruction along West Kennet Avenue! ShropshireTraveller's photo of a snail at Avebury aroused my suspicions, and a walk along the Avenue this weekend seemed to confirm them. Although most of his/her accomplices were skulking at ground level, this brazen lithovore was still munching away in broad daylight. It is unclear whether the snails are directly eating the rock surface for their shells, or whether they are dissolving & dislodging the grains to get to tasty morsels inside li...

Holy Well (Biddestone)

Holy Well (Biddestone) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 13th Sep 2006. The Starwell is quite a large spring that flows from a slope and into a small stream. If you are lucky you may find one of the tiny star shaped fossils (crinoids) which give the spring one of it’s names. These fossils are freed from the underlying rock by the water, carried to the surface and deposited in the silty bed of the spring. We spent some time sifting about in the icy water (closely watched by a herd of curious cows) but found only a few modern coins, no doubt left by previous visi...
