Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Would like to visit
St Mawnan's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 4th Sep 2006. St Mawnan’s Well is dedicated to St Mawnan, a Celtic saint.
From Mawnan village follow the signs for about 1 mile to the Mawnan Old Parish Church which is situated on the clifftop 4 miles southwest of Falmouth Bay. The church dates from the 13th century.
The well is on private land in the garden of The Rectory. A gate guards steep steps down to a sunken path leading to the well. St Mawnan’s Well is still blessed with fresh, clear water and the ambiance is magical. The well has bee...

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

St George's Well (Padstow) submitted by theCaptain on 5th Nov 2012. Just a bit inland from the beach, within lush, almost tropical vegetation, are a few scraps of ancient walling through which the stream runs.
In my youth I was lead to believe that this is the remains of an ancient chapel, and hence probably the site of the well, but I am no longer so sure.

Starting from the top left, the entrance to the cave, the unusual and striking multicoloured rocks, the natural basins within the cave and looking down at the basins where you can see the water from the rocks collects in a natural bowl.
A very unusual and beautiful place.

St Breward's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 6th Oct 2006. This well was thought to cure sore eyes and it was customary to leave a pin or coin as thanks. Despite the well's picturesque location it is now dry with it’s water piped away to a nearby farm.
In St Breward, at a bend in the road by the school, a lane lined with several houses leads to the right and down the hill. At the end of the lane between 2 houses is a gate and once through this the path plunges down into a wooded valley. St Brewards Well is nearly at the bottom on your left hand sid...
